Hello People, Just want to do a small servey asking you which Software u use to convert your DIVX / XVID files (700MB in size approx), What PC Specs u have (intel pentium 4 3.0GHZ 1GB Memory ETC ETC) And the time it TAKES you to convert a movie from DIVX/XVID to MPEG 2 format...
Thanks for your time!!
I have a 1.2GHZ AMD 512MB Ram, uing TEMPENC PRO it takes me approx 5 /6 Hours to convert a 700MB File.

Should you not base this survey on the playing time of the AVI as opposed to the file size? You could have an AVI with a playing time of 30 minutes (therefore only 45,000 frames to transcode) or two hours (and so 180,000 frames to transcode), and both files being 700MB long.
Let's apply some simple maths to gain a meaningful figure. You calculate your speed (for the people who don't like maths) by:
Total time of transcode in minutes divided by total playing time of AVI in minutes.
My machine is a P4 1.5GHz with 512MB of PC133 RAM, and scored 2.786. The file was 2 hours 11 minutes long (131 mins) and the transcode took six hours five minutes (365 mins).
I hope this is right - my maths isn't so good after a few pints of Guinness!

EDIT: Sorry, forgot I was using TMPGEnc and the input was a DivX 5.0.2 encoded file! -
CobradMX: What were your settings? CBR,VBR or CQ? If you used 2-pass did you cache the first pass? What template/resolution? What search precision? Any filtering?
There's too many variables that can affect the encoding time, especially filtering and search precision. Unless the settings are the same then comparison becomes meaningless."Art is making something out of nothing and selling it." - Frank Zappa -
I have an Intel P4 HT 3GHz and 1 Gig of RAM. I'm afraid I don't use the software that you do, so the the valid statement I can make about it's performance is that it's VERY VERY FAST.
Even my spare machine, an Athlon XP2200 with 768 Mb of RAM, is QUITE QUICK.
My best computer is a vintage 1970's Commodore desktop calculator with illuminated red display. Never more than arms length away from my mouse, it calculates bit rates WITH ASTONISHING SPEED! -
ZippyP,
Well, you can't say I didn't try! It's SVCD standard, CBR, high quality motion search.
It's a lost cause I think. Perhaps it could be a new feature of this site. If someone made a list of all the variables that people could fill in and it would automatically generate a score for their machine. It wouldn't be perfect but it would at least be a rough guide.
Anyways, it was worth a go.

Takes me 6 hours approx with TEMPGENC, How long does it take u?
What i want to know/find out is the FASTEST Record of converting with decent quality picture/sound?
Quickest ive heard is a 700MB approx 1 hour and half file taking 4 hours....
