Face it. 1080P, NTSC and Pal, and all forms of raw digital audio from compressed MP3/WMA/DOLBY DIGITAL/DTS to uncompressed PCM and DSD, all via HDMI! Many current receivers feature HDMI 1.2 inputs, but pay attention ... This is the first DVD player I'm aware of that actually features an HDMI 1.2 output, all for under $200. Now that's almost perfection! For pure perfection, I predict that their next one will be a 991 with USER SELECTABLE DCDi by Faroudja. Oppo is the only company so far whose technical support has answered advanced questions such as which version of the MediaTek is used in which model. (I hope they treat the average housewife with the same respect even though they may be somewhat inexperienced--LOL.) Anyway, if something happens to my Yamaha changers after their warranties expire, I'm going Oppo hands down and getting a USB harddrive to hook up to it so I can use it like a changer.

It looks good, black, USB 2.0, component video out, 7.1 analog out. I really wish they'd make a player that used the Farouja chip via component out.

    From what I've read here:

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=879341&page=1&pp=30

It seems to be a much improved/modified version of the 971. I'm probably going to order one.

And I'm too crazy over black - I prefer silver because it doesn't show the dust as much.

On a side note are there any other dvd players that use usb2.0? I understand that usb 1.0 has issues on high quality video over a usb harddrive. Do they make them for under 100.00 for usb2.0 capability??

Does it finally play DVD-RAM discs? Getting tired of having to convert things before I can play them on my friend's current Oppo model...

  7. It's an improved version of the 970HD. It uses a Mediatek chip (no macroblocking on plasma and DLP like with Faroudja chips). Beta testers at AVSForum.com like it. It can output 1080p, has improved audio performance, and has a couple of new features (like HD-JPEG playback, for example).

I pre-ordered one (mostly for SACD, DVD-Audio, PAL to NTSC and region-free use in my setup).

I'm not saying it does, but HiDef DivX could be a good thing because then you wouldn't need BD and HDDVD anymore because the same quality can then fit on DVD+/-DR/DL!

I emailed oppo customer service with a few questions and this was their response in less than 24hrs:

The DVD player will support DivX and XviD media greater under 4GB in file size. You will need to master these files as UDF DATA discs.

The DV-980H has the same decoding limitation of 720x480 pixels. HD media is not supported.

    WMV is not supported.

    Best Regards,

Does anyone know if the hack to remove the HDMI to DVI hdcp handhake from the oppo 970HD will work on the 980H? The hack listed below allows upconversion via the component cables. need a work around on the 980H

Region code posted by louthewiz, April 19 2007:
Here is a new version of the firmware hack to upconvert via component video cables,
Use image burn or burn at once...

Rememmber this is a firmware patch to the original hack,.

I can't see any video on my plasma over the DVI input. I'm using an HDMI to DVI cable that works with the phillips dvp-5982.

  13. After looking at the manual the 980H has similar features as the 970,I like the chassis because it would match my other components.
I wonder if you can dim the display, that's one thing I don't like about my 970.I dont care about DivX,etc but I do like using the USB2.0 for MPEG.
I think I wait to see what owners say before buying one.

I just got mine yesterday. The 980 looks really great. Sleek, black, classy... its a nice match stacked on top of my HD-A2 and BD-P1200 high def players. The display is a much dimmer blue color... not that bright yellow display the 970 has. Early impressions... the 980 has a more detailed and sharper picture (at 1080i where I have it set) than the 970. No vertical image compression flaw that the 970 has, either.

I'd have to say the 980 looks nearly as good (or maybe even as good) as my Toshiba HD-A2 when it comes to upscaling standard def DVD's. Noticeably better than the 970. It plays PAL discs better than the 970, too.

My only two complaints with the 970. If someone release's a firmware that allows bot DVD upconversion over component I'll upgrade. Thanks for sharing the info.

That's good to hear because the vertical compression was another gripe of mine, with the firmware patch I couldn't use the new features.
Anybody want to buy a slightly used 970? :P

EDIT:Here's a couple of online reviews
