  2. First, dam is spelled damn unless you are talking about the Hoover dam.

I'd check Device Manager (in Windows) for non working hardware
then I'd run windows in safe mode and check Device Manager for multiple entries of the same hardware (hard drives, video cards or sound cards) and then remove any extra entries.
If that dosent work, go ahead and remove the sound and video cards from Device Manger and let Windows find the drivers again when you boot up. If that dosent work, remove the sound and video drivers (same as before) and run the CD's with the software that came with the video or sound cards. If you don't have CD's go to the Manufactureers web sites and download the latest drivers for your hardware.

One of the most notorius causes of this is simply having software running in the backround that is not terminating properly on shut down. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, MSCONFIG is your friend. Just go to Start-->Run and type MSCONFIG then hit enter. Go to the startup tab and uncheck any programs that you do not need running every time your computer boots up. Click apply then ok and it will ask you to restart, note that you may still have to manually turn off the computer on this shut down as well. Once it reboots it will pop up a message regarding the changes, just click the don't remind me button and click ok. Then try to shut the unit down again. It should work.

Let us know how things work out.

I am having the same problem, however a different OS.

It is an old Win98 computer nearing end of life. The problem occurs when setting up the OS, then gets into fatal blue screen error and freezes when attempt to shutdown and to re-start.

I have to unplug the computer and unfortunately the changes as unsaved.

I think there is a corrupted file in the system and the computer is getting too old as well.

The computer's firewall and antivirus is too old as well as I am unable to update the protection after a new downloaded software in addition to the incompatible old version.

There are too many programs running in the system and this is also contributed to the problem as well.

I want to downgrade the load and update the firewall and antivirus. To this, I will clean re-format the computer on Monday and hopefully will fix the errors and the shutdown problems.

The computer is expected to last until mid-year.

Tried the MSCONFIG route. Well there was tons of stuff running on startup that i dont really need so i turned them off. There was also stuff on there that i did not know about so i left that alone.
Shut down ok though so fingers crossed its ok now.
    Thanks a lot guys.

Glad that the MSCONFIG trick worked, like I said, it is your friend. I used to have a list of all the startup group items, but I formatted my machine and lost the bookmark for it. Silly me, all these burners of various types and I forgot to back it up. If I find it on the net again, I will post it so you can ID those unknown startup items.

Not trying to post whore. I just asked one of my buddies at work and he had it bookmarked. You can find the startup list at:

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

You can search the list at the top of the page for those unknown items you had remaining.

The problem is now resolved and no need to re-format the computer. It was caused by an old superseded scanner program and driver still running in the system after the hardware disconnected weeks ago. The scanner and its program are too old, way back 1998.
