Has anybody had any problems playing films recorded on white label media. Plays about an hour then gets stuck. Anyone recommend a brand thats robust to play on anything including a sony dvd player

You can look up your DVD player here. That should answer some questions about compatibility.
Have you tried to ID the media to determine what the manufacturer is? That would help you determine what brands NOT to buy in the future. You can ID the media with DVDinfopro.
As far as media recommendations, I would say Ritek. That seems to be the general consensus of many members here. -
Im not surprised the white labels have failed for you, manufactured by princo (sometimes with a fake TDK media code) they generally receive some of the worst of Princos already bad discs. Stay away. As mentioned Riteks are a good buy.

Just my lil bit, I switched to Riteks a few months ago and had no complaints at all, before I used to get cheap media, what a joke
