Shrink is hanging up during deep analysis stage. This problem is not related to one movie or even different brands of media, it does it on everything therefore it would appear something within my pc may be causing this but I have no idea what. Can anyone help me troubleshoot the problem? I would really appreciate it. Below is list of my equipment.

    Windows Home Ed. OS
    Plex 708 writer
    Pioneer 105 DVD Rom
    Athlon 2400 XP
    512 PC 3200 DDR
80G Hard drive with 72G open

I'm guessing you mean XP home edition?

Check your power scheme settings under video properties, you are looking for the machine going asleep(stupid feature for a desktop, thanky you US democrats for the feel good EPA green computer).

Make sure your not running a screensaver (openGL screen savers are EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

What user context are you running other? Generally speaking there are issues with standard User rights (try running as an Administrator).

I agree with Gazorgan. Turn off all screensavers. Set your power management options to always on. I doubt user rights would affect it, but you might as well set yourself as an admin. Also make sure that you don't have programs running in the background that might be bumping heads with DVD Shrink, you can use MSCONFIG to do this.

Oh yeah, you can try simple tools like defrag, even though you have 72 gigs free. If the program was working before and just started to lock up like this, you may restore the computer to an earlier time to see if that works.

You are omitting the most common reason for lock ups during encoding / transcoding: ONBOARD GRAPHICS!

If you have onboard graphics - forget it - buy a separate graphics card.

Your motherboard may be poor. I have an Asus and they are a dream.

I can transcode, d/load, browse, and burn a dvd at the same time (using 256Mb SDRAM (NOT DDR yet) under XP Pro using an Athlon 1600XP+ and a 120Gb Maxtor 7200 + a 40Gb W/Digital 40Gb as a slave.

You may struggle to burn at 4 spd doing that but i dont EVER lock up and the PC is rock solid.

Think about your hardware - I used to have a 1Ghz Celeron and it frequently locked up on an ECS motherboard.

  6. when does it hang up, within 1-10% of the deep analysis? If so, unlock it by playing the movie in a software dvd player like powerdvd.

When you say lock up, what do you mean. Is it you receive an error that says that it cant decrypt anymore. Does the lock up lock your computer up such that you have to reboot. What do you mean?

Many, many thanks to all those who replied. I was doing everything suggested by everyone except turning off my screen saver. When I did that it cured the problem. I have backed up to movies to my hard drive now without a problem. So hopefully that was the problem. I really do appreciate everyone's reply and help in getting this problem corrected. Thank you very much.
