DVD Recorders are USELESS for Sky Digital Customers!!!!!!!!!

I very nearly purchased a dvd recorder today.

Thankfully I didn't - at the last minute I remembered that (like a VCR) with Sky Digital you can only record the channel you are watching which means that a dvd recorder would be useless in a situation (which we have a lot) where the Mrs is watching a program and at the same time i'd like to be able to record the footy.

I can't believe that technology hasn't advanced enough to get round this.

ps. i'm aware that Sky Plus allows you to do this.

its not the technogy m8..........its probably cost cutting thats all.

all u need is a dual LNB and anothet receiver. like u say SKY+ has these built in.


get sky+ m8 u won't regret it.....i haven't.

Becaouse it doesn't do what you think it should does not mean that it is useless.

Actualy it is GREAT since you can record to DVD or HD instaed of tape.

Buy another receiver if you need two views at once.

But don't forget that with encrypted channels you also need two subscription cards to record one encrypted channel frome one receiver and record another encrypted channel on the second receiver. And to get two ubscription cards you probly have to pay for the subscription twice...

Also the picture quality doesn't warrant DVD recording. At best CVD / Half D1. Sky Plus really isn't worth the money unless you just want to "watch-n-wipe" and watch a lot of TV. Remember that the signal is still scrambled when its stored on the HDD so you need a valid viewing card to even watch it. This means that you can't hack the drive and grab the raw data stream for proper DVD burning.

Use a card splitter with 2 digiboxes.
One would open all the channels and the other only the family pack ones...

Actually a 'miiror sub' with Sky is now £15, even if your main sub is the full £38 one. Its only £10 if you have Sky+

I think you will find the movie channels and the BBC channels somewhat better than that. Sky sports are usually one of the better quality channels too. Maybe not DVD quality but much better than VHS. Most of the others though are pretty poor

No the Sky+ box/HD hasn't been hacked yet, so if you want to archive your Sky+ recordings, its either VHS or DVD. I know which I would prefer.

Oh, and it has this nice feature called 'save'. With this you can 'save' to tape or whatever device you have connected any programs you have currently got stored. This whilst recording another channel and watching a third.

I'd hardly say that was a valid reason NOT to buy a DVD recorder.
If it was then no one would have bought VHS recorders!
You buy a DVD recorder to replace your current recorder with vastly superior picture quality and better fuctionality.
They are the next generation of video recorder technology.

DVD recorder useless?

No way, most of my recordings come from digital satellite. The quality is awesome in most cases. If you need to watch a program seperate from your wife or anyone else in the household get a service that allows more than one box (like I have).

DVD recorders now allows the consumer the advantages of watching video for years to come without any loss of quality.
