  1. I have succesfully edited/archived many home videos to DVD using Studio 8. I want to get the video "back" into studio to create a different type of home video.

I have read many pages of posts/guides regarding tmpegnc and dvd2avi, but I am really confused with what will suit my needs.

My Goal: DVD homevideo back to an AVI file for studio 8 to edit with no quality loss.

Thanks for your help! Happy New Year!

you would follow the same steps that anyone wanting to edit commercial DVD video would follow - rip the video, demux to elementary streams, remux it into an mpeg file, convert that mpeg to avi to edit, reencode, etc. check the guides.

if you just want to do cut editing, you can try Chopper XP and cut the vob files directly - no reencoding or demuxing necessary.

but for more involved editing (like putting a fade rather than a cut transition, or adding titles, effects, etc.) you will need to convert to a video format your editing software can handle.

as for quality, you may take a bit of a hit because you will most likely have to go from mpeg-2 to avi and back to mpeg-2.

  3. Thanks for your reply. I want to do more than cut editing but I'm still confused on the process...Would you fill in the gaps...

1)Rip DVD to HD using DVD Decryptor
    2) Convert to avi using what????
also...what do you mean by elementary streams, demux, and remux
3)Edit/Burn new avi file to dvd using Studio 8

Sorry for the "basic" sounding questions, but thanks for the patience.

"elementary streams" refers to separate streams of audio data and video data.

"demux" is short for demultiplex - it means you take a multiplexed stream (such as an MPEG-2 file) and split it into an audio stream and a video stream.

"remux" would be to put them back together.

so you rip a dvd - you end up with a bunch of VOB files. a VOB is basically an mpeg-2 file with some other info wrapped around it, like chapter information, extra audio streams, etc. You can use DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper to extract the elementary audio and video streams from the VOB file.

you will end up with a .m2v file (the video stream) and an .ac3 or .mp2 or .wav (the audio portion).

depending on the editing you want to do, you will probably want to remux these files into an mpeg-2 file that has audio and video, and then convert that file into an avi for editing. you may want to use TMPGenc to convert your mp2 file to a wav, or BeSweet to convert your ac3 file to a wav, before remuxing. (some of the editing software will not load an mp2 or ac3 file - like mpeg, they are more suited to final delivery of data, rather than editing).

there is a modified version of Virtualdub that can load mpeg files, and with that you should be able to convert to an avi with a low-compression codec for editing. Check the Tools section at left. While you are surfing the site, check the Guides as well, especially those in the How To: Convert section.

    hope this helps.

  5. to do simple fades to a VOB file...would you have to demux it & convert it to avi? i thought I might be able to pull the fades off without losing quality....I hope so atleast.
