My Panny DMR-E80 is recording shows in SP mode into AC3 format, and I don't have any authoring programs on my computer that can work with it. Everytime I try to convert it in TMPGEnc Plus, it bombs out. Is their a setting within the Panny setup that will allow me to do all my recording to PCM/WAV or, even better, Layer-II?
If not, what proggie could take the mpg and convert it to a compliant format for me?
Also, why doesn't the Panny record video into 720x480 format?

I have the DMR-HS2.
DVD-LAB should handle the audio just fine (I think TMPGEnc DVD Author will too). You just can't hear it when previewing. This is what I use. Make sure you demultiplex and don't edit before you transfer to the computer or if you do edit you have to Force a re-encode by burning from the HD to the DVD-RAM at 1x speed (Not high speed dub). Also you should record the original program in "Fixed" mode.
On the DMR-HS2 you can record in LPCM mode only when using XP speed.

Only in XP mode you can set it to use LPCM sound.

Why do you have to demux anything? I use the following:
XP or SP record to E80 HDD in DVD Compatability Mode
edit on the E80
high speed dub to DVD-RAM
copy to PC HDD
open VRO file in TMPGEnc DVD Author
add chapters, menus, etc.
Author DVD
burn with Nero, Stomp, etc.
This has worked every time for me. Pray tell what I am doing wrong?? -
The Panasonic stand alone recorders create DVD compliant files that can be ripped to your computer and then re-authored so as to make a custom DVD-R or DVD+R disc.Originally Posted by accountwiz
Why are you running it through TMPGEnc ... to re-encode it?
Why on earth would you do that ???
What format do yo use when you import it to your computer? DVD-R rip or DVD-RAM etc?

I don't own the authoring programs that like ac3 audio. I was attempting to use DVD X Maker to create a dvd-r from video that was brought onto the PC by a DVD-RAM recorded on the Panny.
Using Womble MPEG Video Wizard, I was able to bring in the VRO, rapidly convert the audio to mpeg layer-II and author with DVD X Maker. Results were excellent, and Womble's editing is far faster than editing on the Panny. -
Well I am glad that you found a solution but you might want to consider purchasing TMPGEnc DVD Author in the future as it will allow you to import your DVD-RAM and do some simple editing then author it all while keeping the original AC-3 audio and video (no re-encoding is done).Originally Posted by accountwiz
In fact there is a DEMO version that works for something like 30 days before it locks up and must be registered (i.e., purchased).
So you might want to give it a try.

In DVD-Lab, when you import a file it asks if you would like to demux or leave it as is. My results have been best when I have selected to demux. Besides, it only takes a few minutes. Why do you have to demux anything?
Since I have an HS2 my process is a little different. If you can High speed dub after editing, then that is good to know. Unfortunately, if I try to High speed dub to a DVD-RAM, after I have edited on the HS2 and transfer to computer, then the sound becomes out of sync. But, if I force a re-encode, I don't have this problem.Pray tell what I am doing wrong??
I don't think you are doing anything wrong. If you are able to make DVD's that work in your players then you are fine. Your process is just different from mine.
