  1. Hi

Maybe it's just me but I would like to post about DVD-VIDEO copying being a whole lot more painful than CDR copying.

I've copied loads of CDs and compiled MP3 CDS,VCD,SVCD, etc so do not consider myself completely ignorant in burning matters.

I have recently purchased a Liteon LDW-811S. Any DVD-VIDEOS I created would not even play on my DVD player before I upgraded the firmware. This may seem acceptable to computer literate people but surely a DVD writer that cannot copy video is pretty much redundant ?

I then purchased a sample media pack none of which worked with my Liteon Drive. The blank DVD+RW that came with the player worked fine so I don't feel that I was doing anything wrong.

In the many years I have being using CDRs at worst I have purchased a ten pack with maybe a couple of coasters. Why is it acceptable to have blank DVD media that don't work at all ?

Maybe I'm being naive and we're still in the early days of DVD writing but I expect that if I buy a decent DVD writer it will actually be able to write DVDs.

Without sounding like a total Grouch I think this website is excellent and have used the forums to purchase some DVD+R discs which I hope will do the job.

  2. Maybe that particular brand of media doesn't work with your burner. Check the media compatibility for your drive. I think it's under DVD Media on the left....

    that was a quick reply!

And obviously too quick to have actually read my post. As stated I tried a sample media pack which contained various media which did n't work.

The point of my original post was not to try and find solutions to my many various problems but to point out the many problems I and I'm sure many others have had as well.

As I've said I'm not a complete newbie but always like to try and see these things from an outsiders point of view. I think I've sussed DVD burning but don't think it's something easily accessible to the layman

Dave my man, everyone here was once as new to DVD burning as you are. All you need is a push in the right direction. I will agree with you that CDR is a lot easier - most of the time you can do a straight copy. DVDs are encrypted so as to make them uncopyable to the layman and this is where this forum comes in !

You do need a little bit of knowledge in order to overcome this copy protection. There are many freeware programs as well as cheap programs that will do most jobs you require with a couple of clicks. Let me recommend DVD Shrink which will take the encryption out and reencode so that it will fit on 1 dvdr no matter how big the source is. Burn with your favorite burning software and you are done !

Trust me when I say stick with it and you will get more enjoyment out of DVD burning than you ever did with CDR - you just need to know how.
    If in doubt, Google it.
