how do i get the riteks to burn at 4x. supposedly its supposed to work at 4x with this drive and firmware. when i put in the disc and start to burn, it recognizes that its 4x media and says that the estimates time is about 16mins. then the burns starts out fine, burning at 4x. then about a couple minutes into the burn its switches to 2x. ive already checked the DMA settings and it still doesnt burn at 4x. how can i get this drive to burn at 4x constantly???

  3. Yeah, try another firmware.

if you bought at meritline dot com they let you know on the website what media works with what writer with what firmware, nice huh?

  6. I like my Sony! It's done a good job so far.

My 500-A is on the secondary IDE channel and is reading Ultra DMA Mode 2.

I upgraded the firmware to 'g' a couple months ago, but couldn't tell any difference. Still works the same.

What I've found is if the media doesn't say "4X" on the side of the box --- let the buyer beware. If they burn at 4X consider yourself lucky.

Other media can vary is suppose. I trashed one disk the other day for no reason. Everything was going fine then 'error'. Put in another cheap-o and it made the burn ok. First coaster Ive had in a while.

    Good luck

  9. I downloaded 'G' from the Sony site last fall. It's the only version they offered.

I'm not sure where you'd find an older version. If there is no problems with 'g' then why try to go back? I'm not having any problems with mine. It didn't do anything I've seen yet that is different from what version it was to begin with.

    I don't know

    Good luck.

  10. Yep, if you don't already have a copy of the old firmware you want you don't have much a chance getting it from Sony......

Just install the old one over a new one like you install an update. Easy.
