  1. It keeps doing this throught to whole movie. What could be causing this?

  2. Macrovision. If the DVD is protected by macrovision you can run the cable from the DVD player into the TV and everything will look fine. But if you run the cable from the DVD player to a video recorder and then to TV you will see the brightening/darkening effect you describe. You would also get this if you copied a macrovision protected video tape.

    Macrovision tricks the automatic gain control circuitry in your vcr into alternately brightening and darkening the signal.

  3. TV VCR combo TVs often still contain macrovision protection. But make sure that you are not running your DVD player through a VCR or any other recording devices.

  4. And a correction, macrovision doesn't trick anything, devices have to be programed to react to macrovision.

    Not true. VCRs appeared before Macrovision and they are disturbed by it.
    Macrovision exploits the normal behavior of video AGC circuits and
    sync detection circuits

  6. Thanks guys. That's exactly how I have my dvd player setup! I'll connect it directly to the TV as soon as I go to radio shack. (I have an "F" type connection)
