You would think that using an on the fly decrypter like AnyDVD or DVD43 with DVDshrink would cut the processing time by half since it wouldn't have to decrypt anything but I find it still takes an hour to process the movie "AI" . In fact I find no difference in processing time. If I use DVD2one, I can do the whole process in 20 minutes. Why does everyone love this software? I find it painfully slow (even Clone DVD is faster). It also leaves me with no captions. About the only thing I like about it over DVD2one is that if gives you more options. I'm trying to like it but I'm still glad I bought DVD2one as i'm one of those guys who likes to back up only the movie. Will DVDShrink ever get faster? Will it ever include captions? My drives can rip at 6-7x so that's not the problem. Any opinions?

AnyDVD won't save you anytime, why would it? The time required has nothing to do with the encryption. And anyway, it would still have to be de-crypted, that function doesn't go away it's jsut being done by a different software.
The time required is dependent on your settings. It takes me anywhere from 15 minutes (sub 4.3 GB) to 60 minutes (7+GB with deep analysis which takes 1/2 the time, so that's 30 minutes without it). It's as fast as my ripping drive usually (4x-6x typically)
If you want DVD2ONE quality, skip the deep analysis, that's the difference. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -

Timster, I have to agree with u. Tho I do use DVD Shrink on occasion for specific editing tasks, I find it to be much slower than DVD2One. The vast majority of my backups are movie-only, and for that, DVD Decrypter and DVD2One can't be beat.

Then you should really do yourself a favor and download DVD43 and you can get rid of the DVDdecrpter step. DVD43 is free and lets you decrypt on the fly. Does the same thing that AnyDvd does and it works great with DVD2One. Cuts out a whole step of the process. Using this setup you can decrypt and transcode in 20-30 minutes and burn in 15 (1.2ghz Athlon 4xdrive).Originally Posted by Bodene

Timmster, mebbe I'm just dense, but even after reading the explanation at that link u provided, I not only still don't know what DVD43 does, I fail to see how using it instead of DVD Decrypter would help me do the job any better or faster. Saying it works like AnyDVD means nuttin to me, since I've never used it.
It takes me like 10 min to rip with Decrypter, around 15 to process with DVD2One, and 14 to burn with Nero 6. -
So what? You only have to run DVDShrink on it one time! And DVDShrink is freeware to boot!Originally Posted by Timster
If you want it to run faster, then invest in a faster computer system. Or ask for a refund for how much you paid for DVDShrink.
So use DVD2One then! I haven't used DVD2One in months because I found that DVDShrink, when it got to v3.0 b5, beat the pants off of DVD2One when it came to quality and options.Originally Posted by Timster

I used to have to use a combination of DVDDecrypter, DVD2AVI, AVISynth, HuffYUV, ChapterXtractor, SubRip, CCE-SP, DVDMaestro and ImgTools to backup DVD-Videos manually -- it took hours. So DVDShrink is a godsend, especially with interlaced movies (e.g., TV shows released on DVD-Video) where doing it manually would be a major pain in the ass. -
IMHO, quality should always be a priority over speed. Quality is for video enthusiasts while speed is for lazy people. What good is speed if your backup don't workout the way you want it? There will never be a ultimate tool. Every author will always want their tool to have that extra edge in the competition pool. Only you can decide which is "best" for you with what's currently out in the DVD backup tool world. Analyse the situation and decide which tool, DVD Shrink or DVD2One, will do job with less griping.

Basically it's a driver that tells DVD2one that the DVD is not copy protected. You can then open up the VIDEO_TS folder directly from the DVD. If you try doing this with DVD2one without it, DVD2one will tell you that it can't process copy protected disks. Well with DVD43, you just insert your DVD, wait fot the DVD43 tray icon to turn green (seconds) and open up the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD and DVD2one will rip AND process at the same time. You can uninstall DVDecryper because you won't need it any more (unless you use it to burn). It cuts your rip and processing time from 25min to 15 minutes. So basically it just eliminationg the rip with DVDecrpter step. The less steps the better IMO. AnyDVD payware that does the same thing.Originally Posted by Bodene

Thanks for the explanation. I might just have to try that out and see how it does.
