  1. I am going to buy a new video card. I have narrowed it down to these two.

    ATI AIW 9000- http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-274&depa=1

    ATI AIW 9600- http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-316&depa=1

I was wondering if I should spend the extra money to get the 9600 instead of the 9000. Is the 9600's capturing quality much better than the 9000's capturing quality. I would just like some advice on which card I should buy. Thanks in advance

  2. if you plan on any gaming, you definitely want the 9600 as it is a DirectX9 card while the 9000 is only a DirectX8.1 card.

If you arent planning on gaming, there will really be no advantage in the 9600...

  4. Plus, the 9600pro aiw has dual monitor and a FM tuner.

I've been using a 9600pro aiw for a couple of months now. Very happy with it and am fairly impressed with it's gaming gungho, although the 9800pro aiw I had blew it away.(simply wasnt worth the extra money for the amount of time I spend gaming.)

  5. wow, I didnt realize the 9000 aiw was so expensive.

I'd definately recommend you buy the 9600pro aiw if you plan on playing any video games.

In the States it is $130 this weekend. I picked one up for $100 after rebates two weeks ago. It will go in a second computer set up for Video when I get a case, mobo and cpu.

    How much is the 9600?

    same place I looked.

I picked up the 9600pro aiw from 213 plus $50 GC because my total went over $250. Putting that aside, if you plan on gaming at all, the extra $50ish is a small price to pay for the added abilities of the 9600pro. I'd always assumed the 9000pro aiw was cheaper.

  10. Sorry if I budge in on this topic but I just wanted to know your opinions about what I'm getting. Currently I have ti4200 with VIVO but I lose too many frames. What I'm considering getting is a p4 2.6 (atm I own 1800+) and thinking about getting one of the ati cards (either AIW 9000 or 9600 VIVO). The primarily role for this would be capturing and not from the TV, but an analog camera. Are there any advantages for me to go for 9600 or would 9000 be fine for this? (I'm talking decent quality captures)

    Thanks for your replies.

  11. There is no point in going from an 1800 to and 2400 the money would be better spent (on my christmas present.). only upgrade your Cpu if you can double or treble your processor power.IMHO.

Well apparently from what I've read P4s are better at video encoding/capturing but since I never had one I can't say. And it's from 1.53 to 2.6 GHZ.

Doesn't any of these new cards support Firewire 1394 or am I too confused ?

Is obsolete AiW 8500DV still the only one with Firewire capabilities ?

The 8500DV was the only AIW model to include FireWire, but they decided not to do it again because it was one of the reasons that the card was clocked so much lower than its regular counterpart--that and the digital tuner...

The AIW 9000 is little more than a slightly updated (and emasculated, from what I've read) redo of the AIW 8500. It's main advantage is that it has the new Theater 200 chip on it, so the TV output quality is better.

You should absolutely get the AIW 9600 because it's a DX9 part, it offers hardware assistance for both decoding and encoding MPEG-2 and it offers FM radio capability.

Not to mention that it is not, AFAIK, in imminent danger of discontinuation, as the AIW 9000 is. If I understand correctly, it already has been discontinued by ATI.

No cards are "discontinued" , as support is still provided, they just don't sell that model in stores anymore. My cards haven't been in stores for 2 years, but the card is still covered by updates from ATI.

The 9000 has the Theatre Rage (Theatre 100, Rage Theatre) chips, nto the newer 200 chip. The new 9600 (not the old one) is the lowest card with Theatre 200.

"DV" on a card is not good. Get a Firewire card if you need one, it is not needed on the video/graphics card. You are off base.

Maybe so but the 8500DV and other 8500 models are quite clearly presented in DISCONTINUED list.
    Check http://www.ati.com/products/discontinued.html for reference.

Discontinued, as in they no longer make the item. No more new ones on shelves. When they run out, they;re gone. All computer stuff does that in 6 months or so at most. But support goes on for years normally. As does ATI cards.
