  1. I read in earlier posts that some people could make DVD+R working on the DVPS 760. Since a week I try to do the same - without sucess. My Akai only responds with a 'disk error' message. I used Nero Burning Rom and a NEC ND1300a burner.
I tried to burn it as a DVD-Video, as DVD Rom and as a DVD UDF/ISO project, no sucess.

    Can anybody help me out?

Im gunna go out on a limb and say it isn't compatible with burnt DVD's...either that or you are using a brand it has a hard time reading. Try switching media, and see what happens. Sometimes all your problems can be solved after using a different type of DVD-R or DVD+R

  3. I second the question.

What software (burner etc.) can produce a DVD that the AKAI 760 can play?

I just bought an OptoRite DD0203 (DVD+/-RW) drive. I've burned -R and +R without any problems. No coasters. Movies play fine on WinDVD.

The Akai 760 is another story. First it is media sensitive. Verbatim DataLife -R could not be read. No disc error, it simply can't read them. Too bad I bought a small spindle at Sams club. Will use them for data backup. Verbatim DataLifePlus +R do work (also from Sams, they didn't carry DataLifePlus -R). Now that the Akai can read the media it complains "Disk error". The dvd was mastered using Nero v6. Same result using Dvd Decrypter. A DVD-R from Sony and the DVD+R included with the drive, brand "That's" can be read, but the movie is also unplayable on the 760. (At the moment I'm just cloning DVDs in the hope of determining a combination of media and software that works with the 760.) I tried all the hints for using Nero v5 (use UDF/ISO, set 1.02 etc.), I then tried Nero v6, nothing has worked.

Note: Had a coworker try the DVDs on his machine, a Sony DVP-S360, and they ALL worked. That includes the -R the Akai couldn't even read let alone play.

This was the same story when I started creating SVCDs. The 760 would play the ones created by Ulead but never those created by Nero. If DVD2SVCD created a disk image and Nero burnt it it would work on the 760. Apparently it isn't the Nero burn which is the problem, it is the Nero data layout the 760 doesn't like. Now it appears the 760 has the same problem (at least) with Nero's DVD data layout.

Does anyone have a recipe for success with the Akai 760? A DVD layout or burn tool that works? I'm tired of burning DVDs I can't use. Trial and all error is getting expensive. My hope is that a solution that works on the 760 should work almost anywhere as my end goal is to share family movies with relatives.

By the by I own Nero v5 but won't bother to upgrade to v6 if it won't work with my DVD player. I'd like to buy something that works without trying every author/burner trial version first.

  4. Hi csb,

it's intresting to hear that your akai doesn't even play dvd-r's.

When I use DVD Shrink to copy DVD's and Nero6 to burn them or Moviemaker II and Nero visionexpress to make DVD's from my DV recorder., every DVD-r works fine on my akai. Maybe the burner makes the difference, I use the NEC ND 1300a with a lot different DVD-R brands - verbatim, memorex, ritek and compusa and all worked.

Do you have a change to burn a dvd-r on a different burner just to find out whether your burner is the problem?

  5. Thanks SpiderMax,

I've got it working now. I upgraded the 760s firmware and now it plays Nero burns perfectly. Details in the Player section.

My player is still media sensitive, but the newer media is working.

  7. I am having the same issue with my Akai 760. Can someone please post the link to the firmware upgrade or the email of someone at Akai that can provide it? I have tried without success to contact someone knowledgable at Akai. They all seem to be clueless and only provide support for their televisions!

  9. Hello SpiderMax etc.

The first flash I tried also failed. I spoke to tech support, told them what burner I was using, and he read off the settings I should use. Even set the volume name just to try everything.

Burned with Nero 5.5.10.42 Standard high compatibility settings as I recall. Named the volume RMC_LDR_DOWN. ISO Level 1, Mode 1, ISO 9660.

The second attempt worked, it took only a couple of seconds to load.

Unfortunately the firmware isn't available on the Akai website, they have to email it to you.

Both of the support people I spoke were able to help me.

  10. Hi csb,

    Thanks for your reply.
I used the the same parameters for burning the CD. What .bin file did you use?
Akai did send me a 99BA.bin file (100Kb) which I burned to the CD.

  11. Hi SpiderMax,

The file was 99BA.Zip. It contains 99BA.BIN with a last modified date of 2002-10-18 2:37AM.

The only other things I can think of are:
CD-R (not RW). Finalize & close CD.

I think the tech said to select Joliet but I can't remember if I did. I typically don't if its intended for the 760.

I am yet another proud owner of an Akai DVPS 760 that I just discovered does not play a Maxel DVD+RW or TDK DVD+R; same disks play on my other (very old) Sharp player (the first useful thing the sharp has ever done, quite frankly!). I could really use this firmware patch!

    Thanks!

I emailed Akai support; they replied, asked me to call customer support at (888)530-3588 . I called, got an immediate answer from a knowledgeable guy.

He told me they no longer post the firmware (too many people get it wrong), but that if I send an envelope with stamps, they'll mail me a CD with the firmware.

He said the firmware they have only applies to a machine that currently has 'BA11' version firmware. What they send you is BA17.

To find out what you currently have, do this: power on; no disk inserted; press 'setup'; press volume '+' button; should get blue screen, with version info; last four digits are the relevant ones - mine showed A700BA11, which is eligible. If you have AC09, or anything else, they can't help you.

They said to send the SAE to

    Request AKAI fw BA17

Some day I'll get around to it!

  17. I just got the BA17 by email from akai support (call 1-888-530-3588). I was told that the BA17 can support DVD-R but no DVD+R.

    Here is the email:

    Dear Customer:
Here is the zipped firmware that you need to burn onto a CD-R in order to upgrade the firmware on the DVPS-760. This firmware is only for the loader version, A700BA11. Make sure your firmware matches the firmware requirement first. The way you can check the loader version is by pressing the setup button on the remote control. After you have the setup menu, press Vol+, then you will go into the loader screen. On the 5th line, where it says Sub Ver., make sure it says that you have A700BA11. If it says anything other than BA11, then you need to stop all procedure. There is only an upgrade for BA11 version.

Once you made sure that the loader version matches, you can then go ahead and burn the firmware onto a CD-R. Make sure to name the CD, RMC_LDR_DOWN. Also, make sure that multi session is turned off, and in case you are using NERO Burning ROM software, make sure that ISO Level 1 is chosen, MODE 1 (under format) is chosen, ISO 9660 is chosen, Joilet is clicked, and finally finalize the CD, so no further data can be written on the CD-R.

After that, follow the instructions provided in the document for upgrade method.

    Thank you.

Interesting! They wouldn't mail me the firmware, even though I told them I was an IT guy (true!).

Anyway, I got the CD in the mail, applied it; went well. Verified new firmware applied. Tested; good and bad. DVD+RW now works (!) but ... DVD+R still does not. DVD-R always worked.

So it's an improvement, but not what I had hoped. FWIW, I'm using Memorex DVD+RW, and TDK +R and TDK -R.
