  1. Hi,

So here's my dilemma, recently I had authored a DVD from source .avi files form my DV camera of various trips etc. I have since deleted the source files from my hardrive (still have them on tape) to free up space. I would like to make a copy of the DVD so as not to have to re-capture as the material is spread over several tapes and editing to the right places takes too much time/effort.

I used DVD Shrink 3.2 to rip the DVD - I want menus as well - I then choose the option to burn with Nero and everything is hunky-dory. It plays magically in my PC as well as other PCs (even one runing windows ME!). However, when I put the fresh copy into my LG LDA-831 stand alone player it doesn't seem to read it correctly. Instead of playing the menu, or even the film for that matter, it plays a random bit of the film (usually about 3-4minutes) and then loops, the bit fo the film is usually near the end. I imagine this is an issue with the DVD player, as opposed to the disc (since it works in the PC).

I contacted LG and the response was - as expected from large IT support offices - useless. To be exact:

"Hi, teh record is protected. Thank you!" was all the reply contained. Now, I KNOW I didn't put any protection on it, and it is homemade movies, I don't understand why I wouldn't be able to copy the disc and have it work in my PC but not on the standalone yet the original DVD I made works just fine!

I know its a stretch to find someone with the same player and issue - but any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

This is the second similar post today about DVDshrink problems with standalones.

Is this a recent download of DVDshrink? Where did you get it?

If you have Nero on your system try copying the disk with Nero. If you do not have Nero download imgburn.

If this is a recent download of DVDShrink, I suspect a corrupt copy.

The thing is, the DVD works fine in my PC, I'm using Nero to burn - what I have done as 'work around' has been to nix the menu, and use DVD Shrink to get just the 'main movie' then useing Nero to recode the file and burn...but this is awfully annoying when I spent a good chunk of time originally creating the menus.

    Firs of all.
Is your original DVD playing fine on your standalone?
If so you do not have to use ripper to get it on HD. Just use your burning software (Nero, Roxio or other) and do Copy DVD.
If you use ImgBurn, than make folder on you HD with the name of your movie Open (not play) your DVD and copy VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder from your DVD to it, same way you copy files from floppy or CD, than burn new DVD.
My post came too late, but it is still valid.
    Use Nero and "Copy DVD"

Also, try playing in another DVD Player-not all DVD players play home made DVDs as they should. I have a player that plays everything and one that is temperamental.

Like pepegot1 say, not all players are equal. If original does not play either, than get Verbatim disc and burn to that, it should work.

That does sound like you are going about this the hard way. As mentioned, if you just want a copy of the original DVD, copy the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive, use ImgBurn in 'Build' mode, drop in your VIDEO_TS folder and burn it. I assume the original will play back on your LG player?

If Nero is 're-encoding', that can cause problems by itself. Besides, ImgBurn is a better burning program, IMO.

Playback on a PC doesn't usually tell you much, as software players can skip over problems that standalone players choke on.

What brand of DVD media are you using? That can also cause problems, though more often skipping, not messed up menus.

    And welcome to our forums.

Newest version of ImgBurn has start menu, that is easier to interpret for one who newer used that software before.
Do not have to worry about "Build" mode or other details.

Thanks, I haven't updated the program in a while.

  10. Thank you all for your help, I actually found a very easy solution...

I have ripped in DVd Shrink (I was going from dual layer, to single layer, hence why I couldnt just copy the VIDEO_TS folder as is) Yes the original played in the stand alone. It's not the media (Fujifilm)

anyway, I found out a work around. I am now ripping to .iso file (i tried this before and got an MDS file) and burning with DVD decrypter.

I've also given a copy of the non-working discs to a few friends to try in their standalone to isolate if the issue is with my player, and not my burn process.

Thank you all for your help,

    cheers.
