I've looked sources like "the firmware page". There instructions say you can flash from within windows but when I duoble-click I get a message about mismatched kernel. Could someone point me to a site with instructions in "english" and the firmware.

I succeded in flashing my DVR-104. The problem seems to be in my drive being a Pioneer DVDR-104,but not an "official" DVR-104,it's an OEM Pioneer DVR-104 and official Pioneer firmware won't upgrade it. I'm guessing this is why you get the mis-matched kernel message.
You need a "hacked" firmware with the force upgrade option. Does not work from within Windows, you need to goto DOS mode and run the upgrade.bat file and upgrade will proceed.
