I would recommend the LiteOn 811 drive. It's cheap (<$130) and is dual format. Even better, it is 8x for +R and 4x for +RW. Even if you have media in stock, don't deprive yourself the ability to choose the best priced media when you re-buy. Also, media can be in shortage from time to time.

Recording at 8x should be a breeze - when such disks hit the market in good prices. I currently enjoy the 4x +RW capability and now proof recording authoring projects is really fast. 15 minutes or less for a full project, 2 minutes with placeholder video to test the menu and navigation.

And what's really nice about it is that it record CDs at 40X (a record for DVD writers) and CD-RWs at 24x (again top performance).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Als, I just picked up a Lite-on 411s for 79.99 after MIR at Best Buy with 4x +, - and 4x +RW if cost is an issue. I also have a Pioneer and it is well made too.

  4. Just today bought the MSI DR8-A and I'm reaaly really happy with it so far. Burns a full 4.3GB disc in 8 mins using Ritek G04 88p discs Done about 10 burns today and everyone is flawless. Also, the firmware works first time and doesnt need to be pdated for 8X burning. Oh yeah, it only cost me £95 from overclockers.co.uk too

BenQ DW800A: 8x DVD+R max speed, supports bitsetting, and rumor has it that this drive may write to dual layer DVD+R via future firmware update.
