I experience extract opening a ZIP. The file wasn't split half either. It was 11mb ZIP that when I extract it to a folder, it was a 632mb file.

How do I compress a file to 1mb?

  2. It depends on what you are compressing as to what file size the end result (the zip file) will be and also the program you use.

Take for example a pirated Dreamcast game, when you download one the compressed zip file may only be around 50mb in size yet when you extract it that size will expand to a figure like 650mb. This is because a trick the pirates used where they filled the file with dummy data that was highly compressible but still did the job of filling the CD, the purpose being that the game would load faster if the CD was full compared to half empty.

Anyway, on the other hand if you try and compress a file like a DivX AVI file you will find that in the zipping process you may only lose a few megabytes from the original size. This is because the data of the file is already compressed and therefore is not suited to more compression.

So in summation, depending on the file type and the program you use will ultimately decide what size the zip file will be.
