  1. Hello, first thank you all for being here to post guides and help people like me! i was successfully able to convert an avi file to mpeg-1 (vcd) using TPMGEnc and VirtualDub. The result was good, and i was thrilled. I burned the file onto a CD, and was suprised when it would not play in my DVD player (panasonic RV32) which plays VCD's. It also would not play in my computer DVD-rom as a VCD on WinDVD4. The wierd part is, the clip was successfully burned onto the CD, as i can watch it using realplayer. I'm at a loss as to what happened, i tried several burning programs including nero - each time the file is burned onto the CD, but won't work as a VCD. The source was 29.97, so i chose the VCD option (not film) and that part was successful, as i am able to view the completed product, but not as a VCD. Any suggestions at all? I'm working on a Christmas gift, so i need it to play in either a DVD-rom or a stand-alone player, but can't figure out what to do from here. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time!

Try burning your disk at a lower speed like 8X or try some different disks.

  3. Also try using VCDeasy, make .bin/.cue and burn those. If that doesn't help, try to demultiplex and multiplex your mpeg-files first.

I burned the file onto a CD,
I think you must elaborate on this a little - What did you use and how did you use it for this phase?
I agree with lasli on this - nothing beats VCDEasy when it comes to (S)VCD authoring. Could it be that you just burned the mpg as a data file to the CD?

  5. Hello Mats - i think you have solved my problem - i was simply burning it as a data file onto the disc (i JUST got a new computer with a CD burner, so am finally able to do this project)

I did try to download VCD-easy, however the burning portion of the program (i think it is CDRAOA or similar) would not install due to an error or being unsupported. I have tried again with Nero, using 4x burn speed, and the player actually recognized the CD...the menu screen flashed by and that was about it, so i am trying again from the start.

It seems my problem is strictly the burning and not the conversion, so that's good to know - any other pointers would be appreciated, thanks again for all of your time!

  6. Thank you so much!!!!

Turns out this was a simply problem that you have solved for me - i have successfully used Nero Express, i deleted the menu option, and now it plays successfully in the DVD player.

I am greatful for your help with this, thank you again!

    successfully used Nero Express
When you're ready for fancy menus and stuff, go back to VCDEasy. Just uncheck the "Burn" checkbox, and VCDEasy will produce a cue/bin, that you then can burn with Nero. There's so much you can do with VCDEasy that can't be done with Nero, it's well worth the effort. But as long as you're just doing straight one mpeg video with no menu, stick to what's working for you.
