  1. For all of those Liteon owners out there who were complaining about needing Nero to burn their firmware update CD's, just change the file name extension from .nrg to .iso, and use your favorite image burning software. I have personally tested V0.02.24, V0.02.27, & V0.02.29 with Roxio Easy CD creator V5.x, and it worked great. Just make sure you don't put any additional files on the disk. It looks like they try to copy the entire contents of the disk to Flash, and if it won't fit, the upgrade fails (experience talking here). CD-RW's work best for this.

On a side note, has anyone looked into hacking this thing? From reading the prior posts, it doesn't sound like the factory support is long for this world. After discovering many shortcomings about the firmware (like it will not recognize a DivX file if it does not have a .avi extension) I have added it to my list of things to do. Also, if you don't like the "splash screen" they display, it's a simple fix. Create your own *.png graphic, and replace the file in the root of the filesystem.

Some initial exploring revealed it is an ARM core (no MMU), running uCLinux 2.4.17-uc0. If anyone is really curious, we should start a new thread.

I sent a message to the Liteon Tech Support pointing out several of the problems I discovered, but received no reply. Maybe because I asked them were the source code was, in compliance with the GPL?

  2. Hey, about that splash screen edit. Do you know if there is limit in resolutution or in color?

  3. Looks like Sigma-Tel (the makers of the chipset used by many DVD players, including the Liteon 2001 as far as I know) released the source. This is a good thing:

Here's a site with some info about some attempted hacks

I don't know much about this yet. I looked at the image properties of the default logo, and it is 740x480 256 color, 8 bit per pixel with a resolution of 96 pixels per inch (as reported by M.S. Photo editor). The file to experiment with is "logo.png"

    Ravlen,

Good find on the Source. I have downloaded it and will have a look at it later.

  6. how would u go about relacing the logo file
would you need to reflash the unit with the file in the iso?

That's what I would do. If you have a Linux box w/loopback enabled in the kernel, you can mount the ISO image and read the contents. Or you could burn it to a disk, then read the disk.

Once you replace the file with your own, re-create the ISO image using all of the files from the original image except logo.png (which is replaced by your new logo.png).

Obviously if you plan to experiment, be careful and verify your image before you try writing it into your player. No one will be held responsible except YOU if you turn your player into a brick (insert standard disclaimer here).

  8. An update on replacing the logo...

It appears the logo.png file is only used during the upgrade process. There is a second logo file inside the romfs.bin file (this should be the player filesystem image) called logontsc.jpg (in the V0.02.29 update). The properties for that image as reported by M.S. Photo Editor are:

    720x480 24bit True Color, resolution = 72 pixels / inch.

This will require some experimenting since this is a romfs type filesystem, but if I remember correctly, mkromfs has some options to add/replace files in an image. This I need to try as I can't stand the logo that gets displayed (I have many of my own)...
