Does the "burning stage" of DVD back up affect the video/audio quality or does just the compressing and encoding software affect this quality. I know many folks on this forum highly recommend DVD Shrink for ripping and compressing due to its high quality. I have been using Shrink for ripping and compressing and then burning with CloneDVD. My question is am I losing quality with CloneDVD or is there a better quality burning software I should be using.
Second question. When I back up my personal DVDs I like to backup just the menu and movie, no extras and all that other stuff. I have a problem getting DVD Shrink to do this, the menu will not work unless I back up the entire movie with all extras. I have done the menu and movie only with CloneDVD in combination with AnyDVD but the quality is not as good as when I use Shrink. Am I doing something wrong in Shrink when I reauthor. I simply drag the menu and movie files to the reauthor window and then rip but like I said this is not working as the menu is not working properly. Any help and advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

If you want to keep the menu in DVD Shink, you have to keep the extras too (no re-authoring). But if they don't matter, choose the "still pictures" and unselect ALL the audio streams for the extras. That will free up a little more room for your main movie.

Golfnut, if you want the main movie with an operable menu for chapter selection and NO extra junk, there is a way. (The menu will only be accessible from the menu button on your remote. Pop the DVD in your player and it will autoplay the main movie.)
Apologies to Noki, last I checked there's no guide for this from the author, but it was on a thread a few weeks ago. Tried it and works like a charm.
1) Start DVDDecrypter. Rip all files in File Mode.
2) Start DVDShrink, click Open Files and select VTS_xx.IFO of the main movie instead of the usual VIDEO_TS.IFO manager. This should be towards the top of the list of files. The numbers vary from movie to movie, in case you wonder what x stands for.
3) As you'll see, no extras are there, just the menu and main movie. In the preview pane you'll be able to verify you've chosen the correct VTS_xx.IFO
4) Shrink as usual, don't reauthor. Click Backup.
5)If you go to the folder with the files, you'll see there is no VIDEO_TS.IFO. Burn it now and the movie won't play in your standalone, so you must first create the VIDEO_TS.IFO video manager.
6) Start DVDFab (the freeware version will do nicely), click Create Video Manager. (VIDEO_TS.IFO)
7) Select the shrunken folder and click Continue. You've just created the video manager you need.
8) Burn contents of folder.Pull! Bang! Darn! -

hey guys, here's my original post...

good luck -
fritzi93 thank you for the reply and guide. I tried to follow it step by step and here is what happend.
1)Using DVDDecrypter I ripped all files in File Mode.
2)When I click "open files" in DVDShrink there are no files there ending in .IFO as you mention in step 2 of your email to me. Here is a list of the files shown:
VIDEO-TS
VTS_01_0
VTS_01_1
VTS_02_2
VTS_02_3
VTS_02_4
VTS_02_5 (this file contained movie and menu only)
VTS_02_6
VTS_02_7
When I clicked on the file ending in "5" it brought up just the menu and main movie on the DVDShrink page so I backed that file up with Shrink.
Once that file backed up with Shrink I opened DVDFAB, clicked on "Create Video Manager", opened the folder created by Shrink, clicked burn. DVDFAB then gave me this error message "VTS_01_0.IFO is missing". Where did I go wrong? Do I maybe have some of the settings wrong in DVDDecrypter? Since I have never used Decrypter I do not know what the settings should be other than I do know that I ripped all files in the "File Mode" as you suggested. Thank you for your help. -
Hmmm... I checked Noki's original post and can't see where my notes are significantly different. As you say, if Shrink can't find the file, something must have gone wrong in the previous step. You say you ripped ALL files?
Wait, there's another possibility. The first couple times I tried to use DVDShink beta 5 it was, shall we say, a bit sticky. After my weekly routine of cleaning up junk, useless programs and spyware, then defrag, I tried again and got Shrink beta 5 to work properly. Might have nothing to do with it. But try again, with version 2.3 if you have it. Beyond that, you'll need more expert help than I can give. This procedure worked perfectly for me.

Thanks Fritzi93, I will try your suggestions using 2.3 and see what happens. Have a great day.

Perhaps I'm missing something. Deleting unwanted tracks in the main movie is NOT the same as the method discussed. Extras may include copyright warnings, trailers, even friggin' adverts.
Anyone have a way using just DVDShrink to get ONLY the main movie and an operable menu for scene selection, I'd be very pleased to hear of it.Pull! Bang! Darn!
