  1. Has anybody been able to back up this to DVD-R? I have tried using DVD Shrink, which is what I usually use to back up DVD's with no problems at all. However I have tried 3 times now to back up POTC with no success, it backs up and is burned to DVD-R using Nero and the PC does pick it up, however neither the standalone nor the PS2 read it.

I thought the release date for this to come out on DVD was 12/02/03.

I dont think you are going to get many replies to this for the simple fact that not many others are going to have it until 12/02/03.

  6. OK thanks, I didn't think about that.

Is there some sort of thing built in to Disney DVD's that stops them being backed up?

I have read here in the past that some members have had trouble backing up Disney dvd's. Try a forum search for "Disney DVD's" and you may get some type of answer, if not, then when it comes out tuesday, make a post to your topic to bring it back up and I am sure someone will have the answer.

  12. Ive backed up both discs. for some reason DVDSHRINK was having trouble reading Disk one (the movie disk) It was taking along time for it to preview it. Normally i use dvdshrink to rip and transcode at one time. but for disk one i ripped it with dvd decrypter then transcoded with dvdshrink. that seemed to have worked better.

  13. Is this a RCE DVD? That could be what is causing the problem. I usually tell my ripping SW to leave RCE and when I burn it I select my Region (1) and it works just fine. Whenever I try to rip a RCE DVD and tell the ripper to strip RCE encoding it always screws up (plays on PC not on Stand alone players).

  19. Sunderland, you fool ! "Backing up" something you have RENTED is theft, and is NOT discussed in these forums.

Renting something does NOT give you the right to copy it, nor do I expect Blockbuster have any need for you to retain copies on their behalf...

If you backup a copy of a DVD you do not own for yourself its is Piracy and the discussion of Warez and Piracy is not allowed on the board.

This is not true for all countries.Movies can be copied as often (for personal use of course) as you like it (you have to pay just once - in the cinema/rental or DVD shop). You don't have to be the owner of the medium and as long, as you don't circumvent any copy-protecting (this is a new law), you can copy and give away such copies.
BTW: what is the legal definition of 'Piracy'?
This is of course the German interpretation of an EU law.

  25. Well, by ripping the DVD and removing the CSS you've circumvented the copy protection, so unless the title has NO CSS on it at all (which a rental title will), it's illegal by default from that example.

Interesting point though, you could always argue in a German court that copying a copy wasn't illegal because it had no CSS. I reckon that arguement would last all of three seconds (or however long it took you to say it), but you never know, it could set a presedence !

Don't misunderstand me:I don't rent DVDs to copy them. Most of my burnt DVDs are made from Satellite capture. But in theory, CSS is no copy protection (like the CC on CDs).It's just a play protection. There are ways to copy the files on a DVD to HD without circumventing anything.
Any nobody goes to court because of private copying.
But all this discussion raises another question (in me at least):
If the forum's server is located in a country, where such operations are legal, can such topics be discussed or not?

  29. If you read the copyright notices on any retail disc it will tell you that it is illegal to make ANY copies, doesn't mention that it is ok to make a back-up for yourself. This, I believe would even apply in a country where it's not so much of an issue, as the legal notice is on the item purchased not country specific. The crunch comes from policing, enforcing and prosecuting the matter.

Anyway, I back-up Pirates using DVDShrink and burnt with Nero 6 with no problems at all.

    Thanks

That is what the MI tries to sell you:no copy at all. It's like a contract:if you bought a DVD a signed a contract, which says, no copy, OK that's fine. But if this notice is just to be found after the buying, no chance for the MI.This is a surprise for the buyer and thus not legal. In such cases any contract between you and the MI is void and only legal issues concerning copying can be applied.Such a condition is in disadvantage of the buyer.
