  1. ...Hi all,
I'm new here and this problem may have been discussed before.
I have been using 'EazyVCD' or 'Smart Ripper', DVD2AVI' and TMPGEnc' with good results until recently.
Suddenly I am getting pixellation problems on my standalone DVD players (I have tried 3 different units).
The problem seemed to begin when I retired my trusty old Creative 8 speed burner for a LiteOn 52.
I am running a Celeron 850 with 192mb and am wondering if the PC's transfer rate can't keep up with the burner.
I suppose a more relevant question is - What causes pixellation?
Also, could ripping DVDs that are copies have some bearing on this problem?

    Thanks for your time,
    Dennis

Could also be the new burner you are using,i just retired my 48x lg burner and my dvd burner doesnt burn svcd properly, seems like its not a deep enough burn.pixelation is caused by the dvd not reading the data fully such as a weak burn.Might have to get better name brand cd blanks.

  3. Thanks johns0 for your input, but I think my question really comes down to WHAT causes pixellation - is it in the rip, is it in conversion processes, is it in the burn or is it just a lousy laser read in your DVD player?
It is really starting to turn me off doing this thing.

Are you talking about digital drop outs or macroblocking ? Pixelation is a loose term . What exactly is the picture doing .
Keep it on the big cam !

  6. Hi vtecwil,
The movie will be playing along OK, then colored blocks will start randomly occurring on the picture. Sometimes one or two, other times larger blocks.
Sound drop-outs often occur as well. Occasionally (when it gets really bad) the movie will completely freeze.
It also seems to happen more often when there is more action in the movie.
Some movies are much worse than others.

    Still confused,
    Dennis

I guess, you try to take full advantage of your new drives capabilities when it comes to writing speed? If so, lower the burn speed. I never (well almost) burn (S)VCD at anything else than 4x, possibly 8x when in a hurry. For me, this makes all the difference - no more freezes and "pixelization". It doesn't make sense to me (a 1 is a 1 and 0 is 0, no matter how fast it's written) but my experience tells me it works. Some argue that it's just a workaround for inferior hardware/media, and maybe it is, but if it allows me to burn to "any" media instead of dusting the market for the optimal media for my hardware, I can live with slow burn speed. It still is just 1/5 of the total conversion time.

  8. Thanx mats

I did (in fact) begin burning at 'full speed' ie 52x

I then reduced to 8x (the lowest speed allowable on the burner) with a fair degree of improvement - but still not ideal.

If that helped, I can't come up with anything else, besides that the media you use isn't optimal for use with your new burner. Try a few different makes to see what works best.

  10. Thanx mats.

Seems the only course of action left - will do.

I'll let you know what happens.
