I use FAVC to create the DVD. The encoder I use in it is QuEnc.

MediaInfo reading...took forever to get this BTW. I don't know why, but MediaInfo takes 5-10 minutes before I can even do anything.

ok. what about the settings used in favc? the source is 25fps progessive. what are you converting to for dvd specs? the best would be 25 fps interlaced and leave it as pal video. if you are trying for ntsc, i don't know how well favc does the frame rate conversion. maybe someone else has tried it. the best all-in-one converter i've tried is convertxtodvd. they may still have a free 30 trial you could check out. --

It's not the DVD encoder, though. It's the video file itself, because if I turn off the ffdshow filter and play the AVI, I get that pixellation, but I don't get it if ffdshow is on. My encoder doesn't use ffdshow because I used it once and it slowed the audio down and I had to make that DVD all over again.
-
The problem is likely the decoder that "reads" the AVI file to feed into the encoder.

If mediainfo takes 10minutes to parse a 553MB file, there likely is something wrong (either with your system or the file)

What ffdshow filters are being used when it decodes properly? (look to see what is checkmarked in the configuration) Do you have other postprocessing filters activated?
-
It takes me 5-10 minutes before MediaInfo even allows me to put the file in there. I think it has to do with Acrobat Reader, as that ALWAYS comes up in my processes in Task Manager when I open it.

I actually decided to try letting QuEnc use ffdshow when encoding the file into DVD. (I saved a portion that I know has problems.) The same problem occured.

I don't think I have postprocessing filters activated. I'm feeling really dumb now because I can't figure out where to go in my configuration to find out what filters are being used. I right-click the little box down on my system tray, and the only thing checkmarked is "default."

i don't mean to be rude but are the computer details in your profile correct? if so 224mb of ram with an old socket a sempron 1.99 cpu aren't really up to snuff to play back mpeg-4. it's highly compressed and requires a lot of cpu to play it back. also the tiny amount of ram may be causing programs to swap in and out of the windows page file and causing the delays in them opening. check with task manager ctrl/alt/del performance to monitor what is going on, especially during playback. --

I think they are correct, but I don't typically have issues with AVI files unless they're just completely corrupt. I have about five DVDs I've made in the last month, and this is the only movie on any of them with this issue.
-
You simply have an incompatibility between the MPEG4 encoder that was used to create the video and the MPEG4 decoder being used to decompress it. If you can't force your software to use a different decoder you'll have to use some other software.
-
a couple things to try. download and install the latest version of the divx codec and install it. if that doesn't help try the new version of xvid. --

^ If you decide to use xvid, don't use the new xvid version released this past week until it is fixed. There have been bug reports about decoding errors that were fixed when the older stable version was re-registered
-
1.2.1 is the fixed version of 1.2 released a couple weeks ago. --

	1.2.1 still has problems
