  2. The product specs on the best buy site show that this product has DVI+HDCP out. If you look at the picture of the back panel, there isn't a DVI output.

I saw this product rebadged as a Gateway in a store and don't remember it having a DVI out.

For $199, even w/o DVI, it's still a great deal, but I'd double check about the DVI output if that's a major reason for someone to buy it.

  3. the remote looked pretty skimpy, its not a feature full recorder, still a great starter unit.

I bought this unit yesterday at CompUSA for $249 ($329 - $50 instant and $30 mail in rebates).

    I can confirm:

    1) It doesn't have DVI output.
    2) Picture quality when recording in HQ (1 hour) mode via FireWire is EXCELLENT!!! (almost PERFECT) I didn't see any artifacts.
    3) Picture quality in SP (2 hour) mode - some blockiness on fast motion scenes, but still GREAT!
    4) I can control my Sony D8 camcorder with LiteOn DVD remote via FireWire.
    5) It records audio track in MPEG1, layer 2 format, not DD AC3.
    6) It can play JPGs on DVD disk.
    7) It can play MP3s on DVD disk.

I have 4 pieces of equipment daisy-chained to my computer via Firewire.
As far as I know, Firewire works both ways, either as an input or as an output.

  11. DVI is not the same as 1394/Firewire.

In the case of 1394 on DVD recorders, it's usually one way only, the recorder will receive input from a DV camcorder. It will not output DV.

  12. Only the Pioneer DVD-RW recorders have Firewire IN/OUT.

    Edit:
I guess the Sharp DVD-RW recorder also have Firewire IN/OUT.
