MPEG is designed for final output - not for editing
AVI (and by this I mean DV .avi and not the crappy divx variants) is better suited to editing.

Therefore capture your VHS in either DV (avi) or a non lossy codec such as HUFFYUV.

Once in the premiere timeline , you may need to apply filters to sharpen, crop, and grenerally clean up the signal before export to MPEG1.

TMPGEnc is a very good MPEG1 encoder and it can be frameserver to from premiere with AVISynth.

  3. Thanks a lot holistic!

but the truth is i'm new to digital video, so i'm still trying to figure out what you are saying... but not really a big problem cause i'm a computer user only that i'm just beginning to learn digtital video editing.

i've already downloaded all the tools/softwares you've mention and i'm in the process of configuring it on my system.

by the way, i have two capture cards, one is PixelView TV Pro and a Snazzi* III PCI.

i read something about PixelView and they advice to replace the driver with the one from sourceforge for better capturing. While Snazzi* III PCI only captures MPEG format with its bundled software

    any comment on this cards?

how will i know the type of .avi file i have. Either its DV avi or crappy divx variants as you said.

    thanks!
