  1. I had previously used win2k pro, everything worked fine.

I upgraded to winXP pro, during computer start up all my hard drives show up, even the nec 1300 dvd writer. Problem is I cannot access it in device manager, and there is no Icon in My Computer.

Is it looking for a driver, that no longer exists?

When I installed XP, it was an upgrade, not a clean install. Everything works fine except no DVD...........sigh.

I guess I should have stayed in win2k

  2. With XP you are better off doing a clean install rather than an upgrade.

XP and the 1300a get on fine with me.

I'm running two perfect copies of XP w/SP1 (fresh install every time something gets upgraded - I just like it nice and neat) on 2 pooters ..
bought a 1300a about 2 weeks ago, hooked it up first to secondary slave on little computer - got recognised by computer as "CD-ROM Drive". Swore.
Unhooked it from sec. slave, adjusted jumper thingies, hooked it up to secondary master. Booted up the computer (ASUS/intel 733), watched as xp's dialog bubble told me it had recognised new hardware .. first a "_NEC ND-1300a DVD Writer" appeared, but was soon replaced by "CD-ROM Drive". Swore.
Reflecting on this I thought the computer might have used the same (but wrong) device driver file for the burner, so I unhooked it from that pooter and hooked in up to the ASUS/celeron 2ghz secondary master IDE.
first a "_NEC ND-1300a DVD Writer" appeared, but was soon replaced by "CD-ROM Drive"

by the way the whole time nothing and I mean nothing will burn CDs or DVDs. not the winxp crap cd writing wizard, not nero, not blindwrite, not burn4free, nothing. although both nero and burn4free recognise what drive it is, when I go to write anything it tells me it can't open DAO on the disk (no data is written so no coasters are made).
in My_Computer, it shows as "CD_ROM Drive" but when I look at the properties, it has a DVD region tab (which hasn't been set yet)

I think you might be having the same trouble, mickle.
    it's getting a bit frustrating.
    get a server box,
    get 2 motherboards.
    put them together.
    it weighs about 40 kilograms,
    it ain't gonna get stolen.
    hur hur hur

pluged it into XP, was rockin and rollin' with in minutes, no hassles,

looks like youve both upset the computer gods, they demand a sacrifice of blood, "accidentally" cut yourself on the drive.

The resultant blood will please the gods.

    All will be forgiven.

    The drive will work.

    here endeth the lesson

    :P
    Noob alert!

    Its all in the JUMPERS
or in the 40 vs 80pin IDE cables..

FIRST TRY REMOVING THE ENTIRE IDE BUS from DEVICE MANGER and REBOOTING
