I have been doing a lot of reading but just to confirm, capturing from a dv camera using a firewire card, is it better to capture in dv avi or mpeg, the end result is to burn on to dvd-r and keeping the quality is important. i have read that it is better to capture in avi or dv as you can have more problems with mpeg when editing. any advice would be good, laters 8

Yes, IMO it's better to transfer your footage via wirewire to DV avi, edit with the programme of your choice (in my case Pinnacle Studio 8.10) and then encode to mpeg (in my case with TMPGEnc).
Good luck
