I have tried several diferent resolution settings and bitrates when I covert with tmpgenc(using the supplied templates), but I can't seem to get the picture quality any better. Is there a good setting to use?

Are you familiar with the old expression garbage in, garbage out? The goal of conversion from one format to another isn't to "improve" rather to limit loss.
Obviously if you're going from AVI uncompressed or trying to rip some DV and make a VCD or SVCD where the file is reduced to a fraction of the original size something has to give and quality is what you lose. So expect some minor block noise at times, a loss of cripness or fidelity, loss of detail, sharpness. Hint: There is no way to make a 600MB file the same quailty as a 2GB file. Attempt to get the highest bitrate possible for the format you're burning to. If you read many of the articles you'll see most prefer SVCD or XVCD which allows higher bitrates which limits how much you can put on one CD.

Thats what i'm trying to say. I'm obviously not trying to improve on the quality of the dvd, i'm trying to limit the loss of quality when i'm converting. Someone asked the same question in the forum and got the answers I was looking for.
