  1. I just bought a Panasonic E50 and a LG GDR-8162B to read DVD-Ram discs. After making a recording onto DVD-Ram I am unable to read the disc in my computer. I have been able to read DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW and CDs but no DVD-Ram discs. The drive is supposed to read DVD-Ram so I wondering how to determine whether the trouble is with the panny or the LG drive. Unfortunately I don't have any friends that have a DVD-Ram reader to try the disc in.

  2. Just found out that I can read the Ram disc using WinDVD but I still can't read the files via explorer to copy to my hard drive.

  3. I just bought a Panasomic E60 to convert my collection of home VHS to DVD. I am debating between this one and the Sony, which is more expensive but supposedly better picture quality.

I have DVD+/RW burner. I thought DVD-RAM support is not a problem because I would just get a DVD-RAM read capable DVD-ROM drive. I did get a DVD drive that could read DVD-RAM. However, there is something about the format that E60 uses to write the data. My computer can play the video on DVD-RAM through PowerDVD, but the Windows 2000 file system can't read it. I can copy DVD-RAM to DVD+/-RW via Nero, but the file system can't read it either. So it would be a pain to track down the missing part to read DVD-RAM in the file system because I want to do some editing.

As a result of the trouble, I would be returning E60 and get the Sony instead. It is only about $100 more expensive through online stores. And I don't need to get have DVD-RAM capable DVD-ROM drive. The PQ is a bit better, and I don't have to worry about the DVD-RAM!!!!.

  4. You need to install a DVD-RAM driver to get explorer to access the files on Windows systems earlier than XP. This is usually supplied with the drive, but you can download them from a number of places. Once the driver is installed, the RAM drive acts exactly like a removeable hard disk.

  5. Excellent....yep you need a small program. It turns off too when you put in a cd so it won't conflict.

  6. You posted the Sony would produce a better picture?? Nothing could be farther from the truth. Who are you listening to, some 19 year old kid in Best Buy who is working on commission.

If you would just have followed the simple instructions that came with your DVD RAM drive, like installing the driver, you would be happy.

Read the instructions. It's not that difficult.

  7. Regarding PQ (on analog capture) between Sony and Panasonic, here are a few postings on the topics. I hope to get the Sony soon so that I can do the comparison myself. If you have first hand experience between the 2, let me know and post it here!!!

    Hi TTM,

You have to install a utility like ReadDVD!. Trust me. Works like a charm.

    You can download/order at

  9. Just to be clear--this works for DVD-RAM from Panasonics (not just Pioneer)?

  10. And my problem is that my Panasonic 100H cannot read disks authored by my LG GSA-4040B. Will using WriteDVD from the Pioneer site recommended by GianCarlo fix this? Is this easier preferable to exchanging for a Panasonic PC burner to get -RAM compatibility?

Sure. I bought a LG 8020B (DVD Reader) a week ago and it didn´t work, for DVD-RAM reading, in Win2k. After instaling ReadDVD! it works like a charm.

    Just my 2 cents.

I don´t think so but I´m just guessing.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Panny E80H. I´m already have a Pionner 103. Now I´m capturing my VHS with the Panny and authoring the DVDs in the PC, just because the "pre-made" menus in the Panny E80 sucks.
