  2. The size of the file in mb has nothing to do with the size of the file as a MPEG.

    When you ask Nero to burn the movie to disc 'to play on your DVD player' - you must be trying to convert it to VCD or SVCD.

    All that matters in terms of the end product's size is the length of the video (in mins/secs), and the bitrate it is encoded at.

    VCD has a fixed video bitrate of 1150 kbit/sec in MPEG-1, and audio at 224 kbit/sec.

    This is likely to be higher than the bitrate of your avi on file (which I'd guess is a DivX, and probably has a combined A/V bitrate of 800kbps or so).

    A higher bitrate (more bits per second) means a bigger file for a given length of audio/video stream.

    So, I'd recommend you read some of the guides on this site, and try and do the conversion with some proper tools. Nero is good as a burning app, but it's not up to much as a video encoder.

    A very popular, and effective, method of making VCD's from avi's is:

    * (optional) - Split audio / frameserve with VirtualDub
    * Encode with TMPGEnc
    * Author with VCDEasy
    * Burn with Nero.

    You already have the only of the tools above which is not available as freeware.

    Typically, you do have to split movies over 2 or more (S)VCDs.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.
