Is there a DVD player that will play .avi files without any conversion? I'd like to load a DVD with several short (3 min to 20 minute) clips. And I need a new DVD player anyway, so what do I need to get?

Yes. (Even if some very few players can't grasp the concept of a data DVD, and only play AVI from CD.) And while you're out shopping, get a player with USB. That way you don't even have to burn to disk to watch.

Sweet. I've been poking around in here and it looks like the Philips DVP 5982 might be a good one.

And keep in mind, that any player you choose likely won't play ALL of your avi files.

KK, what if the .avi files are all from the same source (my digital camera)? If one plays fine, shouldn't they all play fine?

Most likely, yes. But all AVI players I've heard of plays DivX/XviD AVI (the ones you create with AutoGK and the like) - and I've never heard of a camera recording to avi of that flavor.

No, it just means it will play those type of discs, nothing to do with the content on them. Most any DVD player will play MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 formats. Some will play MP3 audio and JPEG photos, Then some will play Divx/Xvid files that are compatible, and most all of the above. This thread covers some of the compatible features for Divx/Xvid playback: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic340897.html#1778263

You can also sort through our DVD Player listing and choose what formats you want for playback. Divx/Xvid playback is getting fairly common, so there are a lot of them out there. The Phillips players are economical and fairly common. OPPO is one of the better quality players.

You can make 'standard' compatible Divx/Xvid files with programs like AutoGK or similar. Or you can run your non-playing files through other programs to 'fix' the problems like AVI ReComp.

If you get a "brand" player, look for DivX or DivX Ultra certificated players. "House brand" / no-name players may, but are rarely certified.
