  1. I'm about to get a Plextor 708 and was just curious what kind of capability does the software bundle have? I know sometimes (usually) the bundled stuff is pretty limited- esp the Roxio stuff.

I am currently using Pinnacle Studio 8, well actually I'm the one being used and abused by Studio, but if I can make a DV .avi file, is there anything in the software bundle that will do a decent job of rendering to MPEG2 and putting it on a disc or do I just need to pony up for TMPGEnc? I have Nero 5.5xxx already so if I can get the right files made I will be able to get them on a blank DVD. I've given up on the fancy menus of Pinnacle and can settle for generic Nero menus if the DVD will at least work.

    Thanks.

  2. I don't know about specifics of what comes with Plaxtor. Most burners come with a simple authoring software. Studio does a fine job of making mpg file for you. All you need is the authoring sw. And, you already got Nero.

BTW, you can down free trial versions of several good authoring sw.

  3. that's the problem, studio doesn't do a good job, it hangs frequently (always?).

I posted a similar question at the Roxio boards, and it seems to be a fairly functional version of Easy CD/DVD creator 6 which has a DVD creation module that can handle rendering and authoring. the only qustion now is the quality of the rendering, but then again, studio's not that great either, and i've heard Nero's is terrible. I'll probably eventually get TMPGEnc from what I've heard- but at least it looks like I will be able to make SOME type of DVD that works for now. one purchase at a time.

Studio is for the birds- great for editing your .avi but that's it.

  4. I just bought the Plextor 708A dvd burner. It is great! The software it comes with is Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6. The software is really bad. It crashed my Windows XP system. Thank goodness for system restore, or I would really be in trouble. I think because I had an earlier version of Easy CD 5 on my system once that cause me lots of trouble. I am now using the latest version of Nero 6.0.0.23 and have had no problems.

I also going to get Ulead Video Studio 7.0 and Tmpgenc to complete my editting suite. Video Studio is good, but not perfect. I like the fact you get a full functioning trial for 30 days. I still want Tmpgenc to make Mpeg files since the ones Video Studio makes seem too jumpy. Tmpgenc lets you set the motions quality parameters and then you can make better quality Mpeg2 files.
