  1. Just a question...

We (English Speakers) see and use VCD, SVCD, DVD, CD-RW, etc., etc., etc... logos. We know what the acroynms mean, but how are the logos i Japan, Mexico, Africa, India? Do they use the term "DVD" or do they translate it into their language. IE DVD in Dutch is Digitale Videoschijf, is it safe to say that DVD's are called DV's??? And Super Video Compact discs in french are Disques compacts visuels superbes or DCVS???

Just a wierd question... Or are DVD and CD logos like stop signs (or at least they look the same in Mexico), they may be written in another language, but they are still red octagons. Can anyone list what they ask for when they go into a computer store or movie store and ask for DVD's in other countries?

I'm almost positive that DVD is universal. What you should be asking is how come all the countries in the world that drive on the right side of the road are all basically islands? Maybe because if you drove straight from that country to a country where they drive on the left side would cause a head on collision as they enter that country.

  3. Nah, it's because we have better quality control and don't accept cars where the steering wheels have been fitted on the wrong side.

Seriously, the DVD Forum clearly defines the logos, just as companies like Dolby do.

Before DVD, Philips defined the logo for CD, and I seem to recall they had a say in the VideoCD, CD Extra, CD-i and CD+G standards.

AFAIK, the logos are universal, except for those companies who don't pay royalties and are therefore exempt from using them. Technically. They still do, but hey, that's life.
