  1. I was in wal-mart last nite. Most of the model DVD players they sell do not specify DVD-r or +R on the box.
I keep reading that almost all DVD players currently manufactured will play DVD R format. 80% per cent of Wal mart stock was in players that do not specify DVD-R playback on the box.
It seems that if higher priced units specify dvdr on the box that lower priced units that have this capability will specify it as well on the box.
What I read in the press and what I see in the stores do not correspond.

  2. you will find that a lot on dvd players and you will also find that even though it says that it does it doesnt (perfect example is some dvd players will say they play VCD. Technically, they will, however, they mean a pressed VCD and not a burnt dvd).

My apex 1100W and apex 1225 and blaupunkt players ALL play VCD,XVCD,SVCD, standard and non standard CVD, raw mpeg, DVD-R and DVD+R, although, I believe, none of them mention this on the box.

your best bet is to find a dvd player (or a couple) that you are interested in and match those up WITH model numbers to the list on the left for what you are looking for.

I know that the apex and minteks have had a good run with playing several formats. Cheap, good players IMO.

Wallyworld has the apex 1110 and 1225 for sale for $35-$45 and they play all of the formats (except divx and dvd-ram)

I actually prefer the Cyberhome 300 units found at Walmart for $40 over my Apex 1100 because the Cyberhome plays more than the Apex, including DVD-MP3, DVD-MPEG-ISO and option to change regions in the menu.

Only downside to Cyberhome 300 is it squishes PAL instead of cutting it.
