  1. Hey All,

I got in on the $90 Iomega (read NEC 1300A) deal. Althought the drive writes very quietly, the opening/closing of the door is pretty noisy.

    Anyone else notice this??

    thx

  2. what is NOISY? i mean does it make you duck for cover? are your other DC_DVD roms/burners that much quieter? i can hear the door open but i don't think of it as being noisy.

  3. its almost like the plastic gears are grinding a bit on the last 20% of it opening and the first 20% of it closing.....

1 other CDrom and 1 DVD Rom are quieter in this respect..Nothing sticks out like that

  4. Believe it or not, gears are usually a sign of quality...

Cutting costs on drives usually mean a belt drive to open the drawer that comes off of the spindle motor, which not only adds loading to the motor, but the bands sometimes stretch or perish which is not something you will come across with the gears - which are often also independently powered.

The downside is they do sometimes make a noise - but if you can live with it, the drive will probably die long before the drawer sticks.

  5. I can live with the noise fine....considering it is only a very small portion of the entire procedure..

    thx for the insight
