Backing up a DVD, usint smart ripper, DVD2AVI, Tmpgenc etc.

After tmpgenc, I end up with an MPEG file, which plays fine, BUT the sound is VERY low and needs so much boost, that it intropduces a lot of hiss.

Is there any setting in DVD2AVI or in TMPGEnc that I missed?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Dvd2avi has a normalising option that has to be ticked. I think the default setting is 100%. You could also try the 48khz->44khz option in dvd2avi and see if it improves quality.

Also tmpgenc has'nt produced good audio for me in the past, I now use dvd2avi to produce the wav, Cool edit (or Goldwave) to normalise the volume & convert to 44khz (for vcds). I then use cdex to encode the wav to mpeg audio 224 kbs. Tmpgenc is then used to encode the video only stream, which is then remuxed with the mpeg audio file using tmpgenc mpeg tools. This all seems like a lot of mucking about but I do'nt do that many conversions to mpeg since dvdr came along

  3. Downmixing AC3 seems to leave the levels very low.

There's a setting in DVD2AVI under the audio settings for 'normalisation'.

Normalising the audio track means that the volume is increased as much as possible without allowing it to clip/distort.

So, if you set Normalisation in DVD2AVI to 95% or so, it should solve your problem.

Alternatively, there is a similar setting in TMPGEnc - under Other Settings->Audio->Use Audio Edit->Setting.

Either should do the job, or you could use an external app like Audacity, GoldWave or SoundForge to normalise the wav file that DVD2AVI produces, before feeding it into TMPGEnc.

    cheers,
