  1. Anyone care to recommend a motherboard CPU combo. I prefer AMD, but will listen to anything.

Mine does pretty good for what little I have invested in it. I guess the answer you are looking for all depends on what you want it to do and how much you are looking to spend...

Try looking for MB with 1394 built in (firewire), USB 2, ATA 133/RAID controller, good to have audio on board (you can always upgrade to a better card), I don't like video on board, but it may not be a bad idea depending what your needs are (if basic not hard-core gaming that may be a solution, if your HD's are SATA then that's what you need).
I have bought last year a Gigabyte 7VAXP with all the features and am quite happy with it. Inexpensive and "fully loaded". Good speed and stability. I like Gigabyte, MSI, Epox, Abit, Asus (v. good but quality sometimes not there, I've had a chance to see MB returns to one of the biggest hardware wholesaler and seen a tonn or maybe 2 of Asus MB's prepared for back shipment to Manuf. Sure they move a lot of stuff but that was way too many for me....).
Find a website that will allow you to select MB by features (I remember seeing one). Click what features you want (1394, USB2 etc.) and it will give you a list of models and manuf. Then ask local comp. store for their take on all of them. Check on the net for problem history. Go with your hunch and don't overpay. Go for features not a Brand.
For starter check Gigabyte AMD line. Why? They are loaded with good features. See what you like and what you don't. Write it down and follow suggestions I gave you.
Visit Anandtech.com and Tom's Harware for benchmarks and special features (like overclockability for example if you plan to do that).
    Good Luck
