  1. Hello,
First of all, let me apologize, but I could not find this topic addressed in the FAQ or info on it easily in a search.

I am building a new system, and video capture, encoding and conversion are high on my list of needs.

I am considering the Duron (morgan core with sse), the Celaron 1200 (tutalin core with SSE) or just getting a P4 1.4 or so.
I will spring for either DDR memory, or for rambus.
I also know to get a fast HD (7200rmp or scsi).
I also know a good chipset is necessary (kt266a, i815, nforce, etc.)

    The real question for me is;
Which will yield better video encoding/conversion performance; a duron (morgan core 100fsb)
    a celaron 1200 (new core, 100fsb)
    P4?

TO me the costs are not that signifigantly different.
    (duron 1.1gz ~$100, Cel 1200 ~$120 P4 1.5gz ~$127).

I have not seen may tests on video encoding on most of the hardware guides out there.

    If anyone knows of them....

don't know about one vs another, but someone here recently posted that their dual CPU config allowed TMPGEnc to encode at 30fps+ rates due to it's multi-threading capability

  3. Well, AMD just came out with 1.5ghz, 1.6ghz and a 1.8ghz, and since a 1.4 = 2.0, then make the calculation

but what is most important isn't the CPU, it's the board, get a High Quality board and you got better performance!

  4. Well, if u go with the lower end processors (IE Duron Celeron 100MHz fsb) then your not gonna get as good of performance as if u were to go with the Latest Athlon (266MHz FSB), U need a really good "AMD Certified PSU" and HighQuality motherboard like the Iwill kk266R Plus or Abit KG7-R both of those are my 2 favorite motherboards, I own the KK266R and its a great board with awsome performance and sound and can encode a DVD.avi in TMPGenc in about 2 hours, however, the KK266R is an SDRAM board only, I would personally wait and get the nVidia nForce Crush boards and pop the most powerfullest AMD processor it can support and use 2400DDRam. Yes, The P4 has been claimed to do video encoding faster then the 1.4 Tbird do to its SSE2 and if the software is optimized for the P4 (TMPGenc is) then u could get that also.

What I would recomend if u want nothing less then the best

    1.8GHz Athlon 266MHz fsb (c)
    nVidia nForce Crush mobo
    512 megs 2400DDRAM cas 2
Geforce 3 titanium or Radeon 8500 Graphics card
500 Watt "AMD certified (VERY Important) PSU"
    WD 100gig 7,200rpm ATA 100(Mode5)HDD
    Lots Fans

    That should help.

  5. Hi
Dual CPU 1000 MHZ P3 With 256 MB with IDE 100 AT 7200 RPM
Will be great ... more great than P3 1500 ......
    128 MB VIDEO CARD ....
what else ???? XP or WIN2K

  6. Since TMPGEnc is now SSE2 enchanced I say get the P4. Here's a nice system :

    MSI 850 PRO2 LE
    1.5GHz P4
    2x128mb PC800 Rambus

  7. Dual P3's don't buy as much as you think in proc power. Go with a newer generation cpu if you can. I prefer AMD ... dual 1.2Ghz Athlon MP's if you want dual procs (Tyan Tiger or Thunder motherboards).

Make sure you get at least 7200 RPM drives. The 5400RPM drives are slow and that'll create an I/O bottleneck.

If you prefer Pentiums ... I agree with taco. Stay away from PC2100 RAM, PC133 performs better. Rambus is much faster though.

As far as Windoze goez ... XP has greater ramifications than one might think. Check out my post(s) under "OffTopic" "Upgrading to Windows XP" ... kinda scary for those of us in the computer industry.

RAM is cheaper'n anything right now ... get as much as you can. I just spent $50 for a 512Meg PC133 DIMM ... got 1Gig RAM, very nice. Most good motherboards will support a max of 3Gig RAM ... I'm just waiting for the 1Gig DIMMs to get pushed out into the general market ...

I like Chris X's suggestions ... not sure if the 500watt PSU is required though

  8. Ok, lets say I decide to go P4 (for the optimized TMPG).
I was looking at the 1.4gz, as it is at a good price/performance point.

    The next question is RAM;
The rimm mem is not that bad now (about $90 for 256mb).
With the P4 is it that much better.

Ok, once ram is decided, what MB?

I am mainly looking for performance in video enconding/converting.

  9. Performance/price: Just and FYI - The Athlon MP 1.2Ghz proc performs a little better than a P4 a.7Ghz and is only slightly more expencive. Just a tetiment that cpu architecture and generation is more important that clock speed.

Memory: With 266Mhz FSB go with PC133 DIMMs. With the P4 400Mhz I believe you have to go Rambus. Which is fine because the bussing matches the FSB in Mhz stepping.

Motherboard: Prolly your best bet is finding something that supports as much RAM as possible and has the Intel850 chipset. Intel always engineers thier chipsets optimized for thier chips. Aside from that it's all up to you. I always go with more name brand motherboards; Tyan is my favorite. Depending on the other hardware you have to put in it you may also wanna check out motherboard news groups/forums ... some boards have IRQ handling issues which may be a pain in the butt when putting in your capture hardware.

  11. Sorry for the spam:

Another FYI: I've noticed that, since I upgraded to 1Gig RAM, that TMPGEnc will use only 700Meg regardless of the size of the file it's working with. So, I think, if you can get 3 256Meg modules, do it.

dont you think you should looks at the new athlon numbers a little more closely? the numbers are not the Mhz rather a "PR" similar rating system

  13. I'm not sure, but stay away from Morgan. Morgan is good for gaming but for video encoding you need more cache.

If you want use AMD processor (good decision), then I suggest new AthlonXP for video encoding.
Talking about AthlonXP I suggest 1500+, because really it working at 1,33Ghz, but 1800+ at 1,53Ghz. The difference at 1,53-1,33=0,2Ghz is not so big for twice higher price.

SO AthlonXP 1500+ IS best (COST EFFICTIVE) processor with SSE instructions.

  14. If anyone is thinking of a 1.2 Ghz celeron for a processor they should look again at the 1.1 Ghz duron. The benchmarks for it are BETTER than the celeron. Also AMD went to the "PR" rating because even though there clock rates are lower there performance is equal to or better than the pentium 4 line.

hmm, if you just buy cce se, and a lower end cpu, you can also encode pretty fast, and with the best possible quality, up to 5 steps

    thats what i did

  16. Just checked pricewatch.com and the price diffence between 1g duron and 1g athlon is less that $30. Buy the athlon. They use the same motherboard.

Where are you from with costs like that?? That would make a difference.

  18. Ok, on the whole duron 1gz thing, I have read a lot about the benefits of the Morgan core, especially with its prefetch and sse.
As far as I can tell, the morgan is just an palamino (=Althon XP) with a crippled cache.

I do know that supposedly the newest version of TEMPG is optimized for P4 SSE2.

On most of the benchmark pages, they do not have a video encoding test.

    I am looking at either a duron 1gz or a p4 1.5.
The althon XP is just a little too pricy now.

I know a dual althon 1.x may be faster...but I am not interested in games or frame rates, I am interested in video enconding speed.

Unless anyone has some benchmarks comparing TEMPG 20 using Morgan, Palamino and P4.....

(Once I have cpu figured out, I will get good MB, and 7200 rpm, etc.)

  19. To kr0n0s,

I'm well aware of the PR rating, and i'm happy with it, especialy those who love comparing AMD with Intel, as the PR rating are based on the SPECint2000 which Intel themselfs use! so the PR is identical to P4, so now you can compare a 1.5 to 1.5 and a 1.8 to 1.8

even though the 1.8 is actually only a 1.53ghz, but now it's a fair comparison when you do a CPU against CPU benchmarking.

    To loudanddeep,

I've just checked PriceWatch after reading your comments regarding the pricing, and each Athlon XP is cheaper then it's counterpart P4, not by much though.

  20. Where are you from with costs like that??

    Please read this
    http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2001q4/athlonxp/index.x?pg=8
Here is the MP3 encoding tests (I can't find any MPEG or DivX encoding tests with Duron 1,1 (Morgan) and AthlonXP).

Duron 1 Ghz - 45,0 seconds smaller cache with SSE
Athlon 1 Ghz - 40,5 seconds biger cache w/o SSE

So Athlon is better for encoding at the same hz.

    AthlonXP 1800 - 26,5 seconds
    Duron 1,1 Ghz - 41,5 seconds
    AthlonXP 1500 ~~~32,5 seconds

    How I get 32(32,5):
    difference between AthlonXP1,53(1800) and 1,33(1500) is 0,2Ghz
    I take difference between Athlons:
    1,4 and 1,2 in a seconds 29,0-34,5= /5,5/ seconds
    1,2 and 1,0 in a seconds 34,5-40,5= /6,0/ seconds
    So I think if from 26,5 (AthlonXP1800) + 0,6 (0,2Ghz) =32,5 +-2 seconds

I know this method is not proper, but now I haven't any other possibilities to compare Duron 1,1 and AthlonXP 1500.
