  1. My drive has whatever firmware came with it when I bought six or more months ago so I think it's time to update. Is it difficult to flash the drive?

Easy and straightforward. From inside Windows.
Follow Pioneer links on the page to check for update.

  4. Well I never had any problems with the drive with any media (other than some bad verbatim discs) until lately. I bought 100 Sky 2x DVD-R discs which all burned at 2x without a single bad discs so then I bought another hundred of the Sky media except this time 4X. Problem is the 4X produce coasters on the Pioneer but work fine on my Sony DRU500ax. Funny thing is the site where I bought the discs say they are for the Pioneer drives and don't even mention the Sony. Anyway I was thinking perhaps if I updated the drive the Sky media would then work on both drives like the Sky 2X media did.

There was discussion along time ago

But I don't think there are any problems with 4x media in the 105. Check the link (Pioneer) inside the page.

  6. Bob W, it may not be the firmware, but the manufacturing code on the 4X Sky media.

I ordered 25 pieces of the 4X Sky media along with other brands from different sources. The media code was AN32, and they all worked beautifully, no coasters. I then ordered 200 pieces from yesbuy.net. All had the AN32 media code, and all worked well, again no coasters. Ordered another 200 pieces, 100 were the usual AN32, the other 100 had a different media code, AML. The AML discs do not burn in my Pioneer 105, they are either ejected by the burner when trying to initialize, or give errors while burning. When examining the discs, you can see small light scratches in the dye from the center hole out towards the outer edge.

I have sent back the AML code discs and yesbuy.net is exchanging them for the AN32 code disc.
