They are both video compression codecs that are used in .avi video files. Divx definition and Xvid definition.

As for the differences, well.......maybe one of the experts can supply more info.

I have the latest Divx Pro version and Xvid...

to be honest I like the results of encoding with Xvid more than with Divx

  4. I like Xvid myself. Though I dont think I have ever made any divx movies. The quality of the Xvids I have made is great infact I was suprised at first. The main reason I picked Xvid was because it takes alot less time to encode a movie. DivX takes a damn long time. To much time for me this being my only computer and needing to use it sometimes.

yep, speed is a definite factor as well...
seems Xvid is faster and produces better results...
that's the case for me anyway

  6. I too prefer xvid, BUT I have never encoded a movie in it as I havent found a suitable application. Something along the lines of dr. divx for divx would be nice. I have tried out encoding a few tests in divx and they were pretty good, but I would say IMHO xvid gives sharper/better results.

  8. I used Fair Use for most of my Xvids. And right now im finishing up a Xvid I used Gordians Knot to make. Im really wandering how well it will turn out. Its a pretty long movie. 1hour 44 minutes and I made it 700 mbs. I hope for the best.

  9. Ah it looks great. Im thrilled. My most complex backup yet and it turned out great. 2 days on and off getting the setting right. Only made one mistake mispelled "Soldier" in the filename. I think I can live with having to rename it.

  10. I dunno. I have seen some awesome encodes done in XVID, and likewise I have seen some awesome DivX encodes. However, I have found that Xvd is slower (except for the newest DivX 5.1, to hell with that) that DivX (4.XX 0r 5.0X) and gives more problems - i.e green screen@ begininng of movie, vertical bands across video (kinda like scanlines), difficulty and audio/video sync when encoding back to MPEG-1 or 2. I huess I'm wonderign which build of XVID you all use, as there are several out there.
