i'm learning how to back up some of my dvds w/ xvid. I feel i've got most of what i need figured out, but here is something I can't seem to find a detailed answer for. If the source(dvd) resolution is 720x480, should I resize this?
I've read a few guides and 1 or two said it was not a good idea to have avi file resolution above 640x480? some say to even resize lower... is the reason to resize because people are likely to play avis with a tv-out graphics card that is at 640x480 or 800x600, and thus 720x480 wouldn't be optimal for playback? If this is the case and if i'm using a sigma desgins Xcard (hardware divx playback) is this still the case?

It really depnds on your TV out card. Mine works very well in 640x480. Anything over 800x600 and it has to dynamically re-size on the fly and it looks terrible. I also lock my refresh rate at 60 hz and a lot of problems disappear.

if you want to fit the file below 700mb, as many do, then resizing down is necessary so that a reasonable quality with the low bitrate can still be obtained. If however this is not the case then use the highest resolution that suits you, my simple rule is the higher the resoultion the better the quality. what guide did you use to encode in xvid? I have had a go at this and its no "dvd2svcd" is it. In a nutshell, dont resize down unless you have to.
