  1. I have a few DVDs i want to convert to xvid/divx what size resolution do i pick? I don't want to loose any video quality.

Some are widescreen as well what resolution for that?

they will be watched on a regular tv and later on a widescreen TV once i buy one. Any suggestions?

  2. Encoding at the same resolution as the DVD source, usually 720x480 for NTSC DVD, will get you the best quality if you use enough bitrate. Use the Xvid/Divx Display Aspect Ratio (DAR) setting to force playback at 4:3 or 16:9. Not all players will respect the DAR though.

If your player doesn't respect DAR (or you think you might use one in the future) you will have to resize. What you pick is up to you. Many players won't play resolutions over 720x480 NTSC, or 720x576 PAL. Tey 720x416 for 16:9 material, 640x480 for 4:3.

Yeah, the same as jagabo. All DVD's have a 720x480 pixel size in the US no matter if they are WS oe not. The only difference is that on the 480 height you have black bars on top and bottom. Most encoder GUI's allow for auto cropping since there is not reason to compress two black bars so the new resolution is still 720 x (480 - the black bars).

On a regular TV where the aspect ration is 4:3 you will still see the black bars, but on a WS TV they might completely disapear or be way smaller.

The only reason why I would downsize a DVD to lets say 320x240 is if I was to play it on a PSP or something else that has lower resolution.
Listen to me now and believe me later

  5. If you want to keep all the quality, do not re-encode. Leave it as a DVD.

I know not what you want to hear. to retain the maxumum quality you'll need to not touch the resolution and use a very high bitrate, so why bother?

Use AutoGK or FairUse Wizard instead, click on them for guides.

What version of hardware/software do you have for your tvix?

Maybe you should ask your tvix question here:
