I put the BladeRunner 3 version retail disk in my Toshiba HD-A3 and I had my LCD set to 1080i because i'm using component cables. A warning popped-up "Content not playable at high Resolution-resetting to 480P". Then I put my backup disk of the DVD in and it plays at 1080i without any problem. Are retail disks blocked from high-res playback?
Could it be my Toshiba HD-A3? I bought it for upconverting standard DVD's,not HD disks. The LCD's on screen display confirmed the retail disk playing at 480P and the backup at 1080i.

  2. That's normal for CSS encrypted DVD's,you have to use HDMI to go higher than 480p.

How old is your TV? In other words, does it support HDCP? If it doesn't, the player will revert to 480P on content protected discs. If your backup defeated the HDCP requirement, it will play at full resolution.

Correction - This applies to HDMI. Component video doesn't support HDCP.

If the disc requires HDCP, the player will not output HD video on the component video output. It drops it to 480. If there is no HDCP requirement on the disc, the player will output full HD resolution on the component video output.

My TV is a Toshiba 32HL67U,it has 3 HDMI inputs and I've ordered HDMI cables from newegg, there a lot cheaper from newegg than buying them from BB or CC. I'll change to HDMI as soon as I get them. I suspected it might another dumb copy protection feature.

  6. And in HD players manufactured after 2013 there will be no analog video outputs at all.
