  1. I deleted a 715MB movie from my HD, but it is not reflecting that when I look to see how much space I have left on my Hard Drive. Not kool! The reason for this is that I had just finished burning it to CD, and still had the burning software open to the folder where the movie was. So, when I deleted it, it made the sound noting that I deleted something, but when I looked at the recycle bin, it still had the "full" icon. When I looked in the bin to see if anything was in there, there wasn't. So, I tried putting something else in the bin, and then tried deleting. It said that it couldn't read one of the files to be deleted from the source (that's because it had been deleted from the folder, but was still in the bin, even though it didn't list it there).

So, I tried restarting my computer, but that just made the recycle bin change its icon to "empty", however, I still didn't restore the amount of space that the movie took up.

Is there any software out there that will allow you to delete files that have been deleted, but that are still in the system registry, or where it is kept in the system?

I tried BCWipe, which wipes the drive clean so you can not recover files even after deletion (figuring it would see that it had been deleted, and delete it fully), but that didn't work. Probably because it only looks for free space to "wipe".

I also tried recovering it using Final DataNT (running Win2k) which is supposed to recover files that have already been deleted, but to no avail. That's most likely on account of the fact that I had just used BCWipe, which makes all deleted files unrecoverable. I figured it might not affect the file that I was looking for as it had not been thoroughly deleted.

    Any one have any advice?

  2. try running scandisk to correct the incorrect freespace problem.

I get this problem every now and then, but I use norton disk doctor

  3. OK. I'll try that. By the way, what function in Norton Disk Doctor do you use to fix this problem? Is it self-explanitory?

  4. Actually, I am running Win2k, which doesn't have ScanDisk, at least it's not in the System Tools Folder. What should I use?

  5. When you delete a file from the normal recycle bin Windows simply removes the reference to the deleted file from the file system, but disk clusters still contain the file data so i would advise u to try Ontracks Fix It Utilities Which will delete the lost Cluster files and deleted files,u can download a free trail copy here http://www.ontrack.com

for win2k just run chkdsk /f from a dos box (the /f switch tells it to fix any errors) if the disk is your primary partition, you'll have to reboot, and win2k will check it before it loads the GUI.

    D:\>chkdsk /f
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
    File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
    Index verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
    Security descriptor verification completed.

  7. I did find out about Check Disk with Win2k by going thru the help files. I performed the check, which took about 2 1/2 - 3 hours! It didn't find anything wrong, and the free space available is still the same.

Thanx for the info on Fix It Utilites. I'm going to give that a try now.

  8. I went to http://www.ontrack.com and saw no link to a trial version of Fix It Utilities. Here is the link that lists all of the trial/evaluation/free software that they have to offer:

Do you happen to have a link you could send me, PoGo?

  9. Thank you! I actually just got the full version of Norton Utilities, but I'll download this just in case Norton doesn't do the job. I performed Disk Doctor, but opted not to do the tests that one had to restart the computer for as I needed use of the computer, and if my ChkDisk was any indication, it would take another 3 hours to do those two tests. I have a hunch that I am going to get the same results as I did with ChkDisk as they are the same tests, but I will still try. I think I screwed myself when I wiped my HD clean of everything that I deleted (to make it unretrievable) as this wiped out any trace of the movie that my computer half-deleted. I thought I would fully delete it by doing this, but I was wrong. Oh well, so I lose 700MB out of 40gig, it could have been worse. However, if anyone has any further advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanx again, PoGo. I'll give that program a try.

  10. Not saying that this is the case....but often i have noticed that nero dosent delete the temporary image after burning....which if you noted your free space before burning, and after deleting the movie file...if it appears to be the same, i would check to see where you have nero depositing your temp files and check to see if you can find an image.nrg sitting there taking up space....since the image and the movie file will be virtually the same size, you may simply have been duped by this error.

Also if you are installing anything by Norton i would suggest ensuring that you fully UNinstall it before trying any further video editing. That suite of 'helpful' programs i have witnessed wreak havoc upon system performance so many times i would rather be infected with a virus than live under the conditions it leaves your computer to trudge through on a day to day basis....just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I used to use Norton Utilities back in Windows 95, and it used to rape my computer all the time. After not using it after one of the reformats, my system never crashed due to Norton again. Too bad Windows 95 was on the hardrive still... Heh...

And CKDSK took you three hours? Damn!
It probably found lots of errors and fixed them all for you, cause when I run chkdsk as part of a monthly thing I do, it only takes about 30 seconds...

  12. I ran into a similar problem as bachelor did with Win2K.
    This morning I did this:
    1) play an MPEG file with WMP (in Win2K of course)
    2) close WMP while it's playing
    3) delete that MPEG file (or move it to a different folder)
Windows does not let me delete or move the file.

If I burn a VCD at step 3 (instead of deleting or moving the MPEG file), I may end up with a coaster due to buffer underrun.

My feeling (just feeling) is WMP hogs up the file and even CPU time and memory.

So, I always go around the problem by re-bootting Win2K after verifying all my MPEGs with WMP, before burning VCDs.

    It's annoying.

  13. Wouldn't Defragging the drive solve this problem? It goes by the directory structure, right? Do it at night when you sleep, and who cares how long it takes then.

  14. Yeah, kissvids, I noticed that too with Nero. It happens when you create an "image" of the CD. I caught it one time. But this was actually when I was using Adaptec EZ CD Creator 5.0. I will switch back to nero once I start burning VCD's. I was just burning an AVI at the time.

I've also heard that about Norton's, but it with computers that were running Win98, and not much RAM. I don't seem to have any slowdowns yet, but the second I do, it's GONE. One thing I will not tolerate is being slowed down. And TIbrO, do u have Win2k? and how big is your hard drive? I have a 40gig HD running Win2k. I assume that's why it took so long with ChkDisk(because of the large HD), but maybe I am wrong. Let me know if you have the same size or larger HD.

It is always good to make sure you have a fresh boot before you start burning. Have never had a problem with WMP taking up RAM though.

I just Defragged about a week ago, mijman, but I haven't since that has happened. Maybe I'll try that. Thanx.
