Hi guys, hope you can help. Can anyone advise on obtaining codecs for avi files? I have downloaded a few music videos from the net, and am converting them using TMpgenc. However, some of the avi's will not show up at all upon loading into tmpgenc. Checking th avi's outside of tmpgenc, reveals the same. They dont show up. Obviously I am missing a few codecs, but how do you know exactly what codec to look for? I thought that an avi file ....was an avi file??????

there are about 50 different types of avi files .. avi is just a wrapper ..

use GSPOT and see which codec you need and only install the codec required ..

Thanks guys - great info. Just one more question on codecs:- Now noticed that when playing mpeg2 files on my pc, my windows media player has a nag screen that tells me I must register 'my player' at
    http://www.moonlight.co.il/soft_pc_codec.htm

I presume that this must be the mp2 codec ? Is there anywhere I can get a free mp2 codec, and if so, how do I then integrate that codec with my windows media player?

PowerDVD has a trial version and will install an mpeg2 codec.
