dvdr's and dvd players

alright ive been burning movies with dvd shrink for some time now and they always work in my xbox and ps2 but recently a friend wanted some movies. i burned them the same way but for some reason they dont work in his dvd player. we brought them to another friends house and they dont work in his either. so my question is whats the deal with that? why would they work in a ps2-xbox but not a regular dvd player? is it my dvdrs, the program im using, or just that their dvd players stink. i use dvd shrink and use imation dvdr's. any help is greatly appreciated
