Any recommendations for players that will play dvdr dual layer discs?

I have the philips 5960 but it does not support that type of dvdr.Are there any players out there within the 120 $ range that will play dual layer discs?Any help wiuld be appreciated.Thx

All to days DVD players play dual layer discs. A lot of commercial DVD's actually are dual layer.
If your Philips plays commercial DVD's with DVD9 on it then it plays dual layers too.
If the dual layer disks you burned yourself on DVD+R DL don't play on it then there must be something wrong with your burner or the brand disks you use. If they play well on other DVD players then your Philips probably has problems with DVD+R single layer too !?

I know what u mean.I should precise my post a bit more.What i meant is the dvd wont recognize divx/xvid burned files as data onto the dl disc.The computer recognizes it from the same disc but not the dvd.Is it standard for this model or is there a problem with the dvd player.Other burned data single layer dvds play no problem.

Most likely, this is a typical media issue. The Divx players that I have, all read divx DL discs. Try a different brand of discs.

FWIW, the only reliable DL media is Verbatim. Everything else is hit or miss.

And you should definitely use DVD+R DL instead of DVD-R DL discs as well. There are no guarantees, but most modern DVD players will play burnable dual layer disc OK. Do keep in mind that Divx/Xvid playback is special. To play these back the player must have a special chip designed only for Divx playback. There are limits on how big a Divx/Xvid file can be. I've heard that some players won't play anything more than 2 GB in size. If you burned to a dual layer disc, perhaps the problem is that your files are too big. It could also be the media (ie. you didn't use Verbatim) or that the player doesn't like dual layer discs, or that you burned DVD-R DL and your player has problems with it. My player has problems with DVD-R DL discs, so given their cost and the problems with them, I don't use those at all. The DVD-R DL discs are kind of kludgey how they got them to work and it's been said that Nero can't burn them correctly, so even that could be an issue if you used DVD-R DL. You don't give a lot of details, so we're just speculating here.

Philips 5960 and 5982 both support and play DVD video as well as Divx/Xvid/Mpg/MP3 off of DVD+R DL discs for me.

I've used Sony and Verbatim and burned with Imgburn and Nero 6.6. I had problems with the discs not playing before with the same software until I changed the burner.

Thx for the answers everyone.I currently have ridata dvd +R dl.I have changed the dvd software to cdburner xp pro and this one does not even recognize dvd +r dl discs (.My burner is dl compatible as i burned files on dl discs before,so now i need a better software.Any recomendations for a good burning software?That Imgburn does not recognize files that i want to put onto my discs,i get the message "invalid or unsuported image file" not sure why?My files are all avis.Thx

Imgburn will do it for you - if you use it correctly. Click on Mode->Build and you can add any file type you want. Use Verbatim +R DL discs from Singapore, or flush your money down the toilet. The forums are littered with people creating coasters from Ridata DL discs.
