    My mates pc starts to boot then tries to load windows xp_home then moniter comes up with out of range and shuts system down anyone know what prob is as he does not want a total re--install.

    That means the monitor isn't getting a signal from the computer. Try to boot in safe mode. It's F5, F8 or one of those keys, not sure can't remember.
