use the DVDRhelp Bitrate Calculator (in the Tools section) to find a bitrate that you can fit 3 hours on a disc, then use an mpeg-2 encoder such as TMPGenc or MainConcept to encode your avi to mpeg-2 at that bitrate.

It sounds like you need an authoring tool. Check the list of them under tools to the left. I use TMPGEnc author, but there are freeware ones also. Haven't used Shrink sucessfully, but I believe it works after authoring. Alternativly you can encode with TMPGEnc or Mainconcept and then author. Check the guides.

Mentioning DVDShrink implies you don't know what your doing.

    You need to:

    1) Capture footage from camera to Computer
    2) Edit footage
    3) Encode Footage to a DVD Standard
    4) Author DVD

Sounds simple, and can be, or it can be very complex. It just depends on how fancy you want to get. Search on the 4 basic subjects(you have 4 distinct steps you need to do) and go from there.

  5. the avi files are seperated into 4 files, does the author program put them all together?

  6. No you would need to join them yourselves before or after you authored them (much better to do it before) this can be done using virtual dub and you can find a guide on this on the left.

It is taken for granted that you can do certain things on your own. These include, but aren't limited to reading english, being able to download, and beign able to install software. Generally speaking this involves the use of winzip/winrar/winace software.

Being able to use the seach page on this site will make your life incredibly easier.

    Sigh.

You can't do anything with an AVI file and a DVDR, except store them for longterm. Your not reading.

You have to convert the AVI's before any DVD player will play them. That's waht TMPGENC / CCE / Mainconcept is for. It makes an MPEG2 file that's DVD complient. Audio is a seperate issue (DVD standard for NTSC land is PCM or AC3/5.1, not mp2/mp3).

We skipped over editing your footage.

Once you've converted, you have to author the DVD (build the files and structure that's on a DVD).

You are trying to do a medium-hard project with no prior experience. However, it's been done to death and the guides ahve step by step examples of everything you need to do.

TMPGenc (encoding program) and TMPG DVD Author (dvd authoring program) are two different programs - make sure you are using the right one for your task.

as for Virtualdub, go to www.virtualdub.org and find the links to the download.

it sounds like you need some remedial education before you jump into authoring - you should read the "What Is" sections at above left, also the How To sections, and check the Glossary if you find terms you are unfamilair with.
